H ere lies the chief labor,—to fight a phantasm or airy apparition, such as thoughts are. He sets-'him self -chiefly against these heart- sins, because he knows th a t these are sins th a t are, most of all, contrary to grace, and do, most of all, weaken and waste grace. Outward sins are like the many caterpillars, th a t devour th e verdure and .flourishing of grace; bu t heart-sins are like so many worms, th a t gnaw the very roots of grace.—Hopkins.

suade. , N either can waste time w ith dec orations. ‘‘ More p articularly neither can afford to think of the reputation he is going to make for himself. Every thought must go into g etting the men to believe w hat he believes—and then act on i t . ” S im plicity in U tte ra n c e Be simple, be unaffected, be honest, in your speaking and w riting. Never use a long word where a short one will do. Call a spade a spade, and not a well-known oblong instrum ent of manual husbandry; let home be home, not a residence; a place a.place, not a locality; and so of the rest. Where a short word will do, you al ways lose by using a long one. You lose in clearness; you lose in honest expression of your meaning; and, in the honest opin ion of all men who are qualified to judge, you lose in reputation for ability. The only true way to shine even in this false world is to be modest and unassuming. Falsehood may be a very thick crust; but, in the course of time, tru th will find a place to break through. Eleganee of la n guage may not be in the power of all of us; bu t simplicity, and straight-forw ard ness are. W rite much as you would speak; speak as you think. I f w ith your in fer iors, speak no coarser th an usual; if w ith your superiors, no finer. Be w hat you say; and, w ithin the rules of prudence, say w hat you are.—Dean Alford. P re a c h L ove M ostly Sometimes, right solemnly th e' sacred mysteries of eternal w rath must be preach ed; b u t fa r oftener let us preach the won drous love of God. There are more souls won by wooing th an by threatening. I t is not hell, bu t Christ, we desire to preach. O sinners! we are not afraid to tell you of your doom; bu t we do not choose to be forever dwelling on th a t doleful theme. We rath er love to tell you of Christ, and Him crucified. We w ant to have our preaching rath er full of the frankincense of the m erits of Christ th an of th e smoke and fire and terrors of Mount Sinai. We are not come unto Mount Sinai, bu t unto Mount Zion, where m ilder words declare
