H e n o ted th a t w hen L azaru s w as ra ise d from th e d ead a g re a t crow d of people cam e to B eth any , n o t so m uch th a t th e y m ig h t see Jesu s, b u t th a t th e y m ig h t see L aza­ ru s w hom H e h a d ra ise d from th e dead ; b u t th e rise n L a z a ru s w as so n e a r Je su s th a t th e y saw Je su s also. On one occasion fo r a w ag er h e h ad h is h a n d s tie d be­ h in d h is b ack a n d fo u g h t a ferocious E n g lish bulldog w ith no w eapon b u t his te e th . H e did som e of th e m o st ex­ tra o rd in a ry th in g s o u t of sh eer deviltry. H e w as n o t saved th e first n ig h t. B u t a fte r a few w eek s one Sunday m o rn ing th e g re a t big fellow w alk ed dow n th e aisle a n d flung h im self upon his knees a t th e comm union ra il. T he m an was saved. T he n ex t m o rn in g a t h aif-p ast fo u r h e w as back a t th e q u a rry w here he w orked a n d to ld ev ery m an on th e job w h a t h a d h appened. A nd tho se m en who d ared n o t lift a finger ag ain st him in h is u n re g e n e ra c y b egan to ta u n t h im m o st cruelly. H e stood th e te s t splend id ly fo r a few days, th e n one day w hile th e y w ere b lastin g , a g re a t ro ck slipped an d c a u g h t th e first finger of h is rig h t h a n d a n d jam ­ m ed it q u ite badly. B efo re Bob (fo r th a t w as his n am e ) knew w h a t he -was saying, o u t came a g re a t o ath . T h e big ro u g h -h e a rte d chaps said, “ Poor Bob, le t u s w rap it u p .” The te a rs w ere on Bob’s face as h e said, “ N ay; I h av e a b ig g er w ound th a n th a t; we w ill h av e th a t done first.” And su rro u n d e d by h is w o rkm an , he k n e lt down, clasped h is h an d s, a n d w ith the blood stre am in g down his a rm he called u n to God fo r forgiveness. W hen th e peace cam e he go t up a n d said : “ I t is all rig h t, m ates, God h as fo r­ given m e f now you can w rap i t u p .” W hen Bob cam e to th e m eetin g th e next S unday you w ould have th o u g h t th a t th e lo rd m ayo r and c o rp o ratio n w ere com ing.
