are m utilated beyond recognition. Isaiah is carved up wonderfully in accordance with the views of higher critics. The prophets are given only in piecemeal. The rationaU sts now have a complete Bible, w ith everything elim inated th a t m ight shock th eir refined tastes. Papers have reported an experience of our friend, Rev. E li Eriksen, th e con verted monk, a t Aberdeen, So. Dak. Ro man Catholics of the place were so dis turbed about the revelations he was mak ing, th a t a crowd of Catholie soldiers in uniform attended his meeting and in the m idst of the service pu t down a barrage of ro tten eggs and seriously injured sev eral persons by breaking chairs over th eir heads. W hat a fine spectacle it would be for a crowd of P ro testan ts to enter a Roman Catholic church in U. S. uniforms and throw ro tten eggs a t the priest! The ro tten egg artists all seem to belong on the other side. Out of a to ta l of 12,000 suicides in 1920, 707 were children—a frig h tfu l indictm ent of modern civilization. The average age .of these children was 15 years. Many of the suicides are said to have been living in prosperous circumstances. P aris is to have a Bible In stitu te, simi la r to those in America. This has been brought about largely through the interest and lib erality of friends in America, chief ly Dr. A. C. Dixon of the Bible In stitu te of Los Angeles, formerly of Metropolitan Tabernacle, London. A suitable building has been procured and In stitu te work be gins October first. I t will receive young men and women desirous of preparation as missionaries, evangelists etc. GOD’S WELL “ Ju st to be tender, ju st to be true, Ju st to be glad th e whole day through. Ju st to be .merciful, ju st to .b e mild, Ju st to be tru stfu l as a 'child. Ju st to be gentle, kind and sweet, Ju st to be helpful w ith w illing feet. Ju st to be cheery when things go wrong, Ju st to drive sadness away w ith a song. W hether the hour is dark or bright, Ju st to be loyal to God and right. Ju s t to believe th a t God knows best, Ju st in H is promise ever to rest— Ju st to le t love be our daily key, This is God’s will for you and for m e.”

dience, and where his meeting was fol lowed by a lecture on th e Second Coming of Christ by Dr. L. W. Munhall, a t which standing room was scarce. There were constant “ Am ens” and “ H allelujahs” from pastors present and when the lecture was over the m inisters sang “ Glory, H al lelu jah ” . for tw enty minutes. Looks as though there are several thousand yet who h av en ’t bowed the knee to Baal. Robert Lansing makes th is significant statem ent, of in terest to those who b e lieve th a t attem pts of man to set up the millennium will fail ap art from a divine provision for recreating th e human heart. “ These incidents,” he says, “ are manifep- tations of the weak influence th a t abstract justice and the desire for th e common good exerted on th e G reat Powers, and of the im practicability of relying unreserved ly on th eir support of jo in t action, through an international organization, which was in any way detrim ental to th eir m aterial interests. From the theoretical standpoint of the moral philosopher, good fa ith and a sense of justice are irresistible forces in the relations between nations, bu t prac tically—and we must look to the practical in the world of the present—selfishness is, and I fear w ill continue to be, the supreme impulse of nations in th eir dealings w ith one another un til mankind is morally re generated.” Dr. Shailer M atthew s of Chicago Uni versity is very much h u rt because the N orthern B aptist Convention voted to ac cept a g ift of $1,500,000 w ith a creedal attachm ent forbidding the use of any of the money for higher criticism propaganda. In a.vigorous article in The Independent, he makes th e following wail: “ W hat we face is an organized and heavily financed propaganda against the teachings of mod ern science, the application of Christianity to social reconstruction, together w ith an attem pt to control, by the power of money, the convictions and messages of Christian preachers. Evidence of th is new move ment has been gathering for several y ears.” During the war, the doctor sug gested th a t it was probably pro-German money th a t was back of prem illennial teach ing. We have never heard a word from him in regard to the source of th e funds, th a t enable th e Chicago U niversity to flood the country w ith faith-w recking lit erature. Now we have th e “ Shorter Old Testa m ent,” the promised companion to “ The Short New T estam ent.” Like the earlier edition, it is short nearly everything th a t is v ital to salvation.
