port the strong, continuous demand for sustainable packaging. This is one of the key strategic focus ar- eas in which the Group is building its market share with both existing and new customers. Stora Enso already holds a leading global market position in this segment. The potential investment in Oulu would target high-quality and low carbon-footprint packaging segments for frozen and chilled food and beverages, as well as for non-food applications such as pharma and cosmetics. The feasibility study will also assess how the conversion could contrib- ute to Stora Enso’s science-based targets regarding operational CO2 emissions. Based on full ramp-up, the potential top line sales impact of the conversion would gradually reach an annual level of EUR 800 million. Capital expen- diture is estimated to be EUR 900–1,000 million during 2023–2026. The investment would include the conversion of the former paper machine and the sheeting facility. It would also include invest- ments in wood handling, the bleached chemi-ther- momechanical pulp (BCTMP) plant, the biomass boiler and the effluent treatment plant. The increase in pulp wood consumption in Oulu would be approximately one million cubic meters, utilizing the volumes freed up after closure of the Veitsiluoto site. With the investment, an estimat-

As part of UPM, UPM Raflatac aims to reduce or replace virgin fossil sources of carbon that add burden to the carbon cycle by applying the princi- ples of reduce, recycle, renew, and reuse through re- sponsible sourcing, sustainable operations and logis- tics all the way to innovative products and services. UPM Raflatac has taken steps to make its produc- tion more sustainable. Six of its ten factories are fully powered with renewable electricity, and the company has reduced its factory greenhouse gas emissions by 47 percent since 2015. A high share of UPM Raflatac’s products use certified materials from forests that are managed as carbon sinks – and this number will keep rising in the future. Is It Feasible? In other news, Stora Enso is starting a feasibility study for the possible conversion of an idle paper machine at its Oulu site in Finland for a high-volume consumer board line. BestBrightHalfHOUSEtwo.qxp_Layout 1 9/12/18 4:28 PM Page 1 Artificial intelligence (AI) — Comp nies are us- ing AI in several ways to address ESG challenges Emerging Trends Affect ESG In Packaging GlobalData has released what it considers to be the key technology trends impacting environmen- tal, social, and governance (ESG) performance. Online shopping and delivery services have dom- inated the shopping landscape over the last year as a result of Covid-19 restrictions. As a result, the packaging sector is under significant scrutiny not only for the safety and hygiene credentials, but also for their sustainability benefits as consumers seek environmentally responsible solutions that do not interfere with their shopping habits. Internet of Things (IoT) — Packaging compa- nies use IoT in their factories to operate with far greater efficiency and flexibility, and to constant- ly monitor energy and water consumption. A 2018 analysis of more than 640 IoT deployments, un- dertaken by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in collaboration with IoT Analytics, showed that 84% of existing IoT deployments address, or have the power to advance, the United Nations (UN) 17 Sus- tainable Development Goals (SDGs).
within the packaging sector. For example, compa- nies can deploy AI to analyse data from production machines and cooling and heating systems to iden- tify areas to improve their efficiency. Additionally, AI-powered robots use computer vi- sion (CV) and machine learning (ML) to differenti- ate and sort materials based on their characteristics to ensure they can re-enter the supply chain. ESG: Advanced materials — As progress in ad- vanced materials continues amid a growing focus on recyclable materials, increased taxation, and ris- ing bans on single-use plastics, materials such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) will be less favorable options for packaging. Blockchain — Blockchain is an electronic ledger of transactions that are continuously maintained in blocks of records. The ledger is jointly held and run by all participants and protected by cryptographic security. The movement of goods across the globe depends on a complex set of processes and a vast ar- ray of regulations. Blockchain enables companies to record information like location, quantity, date, and certification, increasing transparency and efficiency and reducing the number of counterfeit products.

APR Launches Global Design Guidance Platform The Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) has launched the APR Global Design Catalog, a com- prehensive resource to access the most current plastic packaging recyclability guidelines for coun- tries and regions around the world. Different countries and regions operate a vari- ety of recycling collection and processing systems. Many of them oversee complex Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) programs that hold manufac- turers and suppliers accountable for the end-of-life fate of packaging materials. EPR programs in virtu- ally all jurisdictions reference some design for re- cyclability index to encourage companies to design more sustainable packaging. The catalog includes guidance from Denmark, EU, France, Germany, the Netherlands, South Af- rica, South Korea, Sweden, and UK. It covers re- cyclability evaluations for rigid PET, rigid HDPE, rigid PP, and flexible PE film packaging. Additional countries and features will be added in the coming months. TLMI Holds Webinar Outlining APR Program TLMI recently sponsored an educational webinar highlighting the Association of Plastic Recyclers’ (APR) new Meets Preferred Guidance Recognition program. The program was developed to recog- nize the recyclability of established products in the marketplace. More than 70 converter and supplier companies attended the webinar, which provided an in-depth look at the program and its impact on the label industry. Within the Meets Preferred Guidance program, each element of a product design is classified into one of four recyclability categories as detailed in the APR Design Guide for Plastics Recyclability: APR Design Preferred; Detrimental to Recycling; Renders the Package Non-Recyclable; and Requires Testing. Antares Vision Group Acquires ACSIS Antares Vision Group (AVG), a global provider of hardware and software track and trace systems and a specialist in inspection systems and smart data management, has acquired ACSIS Inc. through its fully controlled company rfxcel for an enterprise value of $12 million.
