HMRC WEEKLY UPDATE 15 FEBRUARY 2013

18 February 2013

HMRC has issued the latest update in their informal newsletter to stakeholders. Please do remember this is an informal update shared with representatives for the benefit of members. Get set for PAYE Real Time Information (RTI): HMRC has published a What’s New announcement explaining that over 1.4 million employers will receive a letter during February telling them that they must start reporting PAYE in real time from April 2013.

April 2013 is fast approaching – please encourage your clients to read these letters carefully and follow their instructions straight away if they haven’t already.

HMRC has also published a press release called Call to action – Government tells business ‘prepare for 21st century tax reporting’ , explaining that RTI will be better for employers, employees and for Britain. It includes quotes from Lin Homer, Chief Executive of HMRC, and two customers from the RTI pilot who have first-hand experience of operating PAYE in real time. Change of address for employees We are working to improve our accuracy in processing change of address notifications that we receive from employees. It would help us to do this if more employees were to use the HMRC address change email template rather than other forms of notification, which we have sometimes misinterpreted as a change in the employer’s address. If you routinely provide advice or assistance to your employees in notifying their changes of address or other personal details to HMRC, please ask them to use the on-line facility above. It really is in their interests for them to keep us up-to-date with their address changes. Each year some repayments are returned to us undelivered because we do not hold an up-to-date address for the individual and they do not receive the payment we owe them. So please encourage your employees to use our email form to help us keep our records up-to-date. We believe that this will be more efficient for the individual and will reduce the scope for error on our part.
