Stephen Banyard, Acting Director General for Personal Tax, said:

“We are pleased that we are able to start this process more quickly than in previous years, giving money back to those we owe and delivering certainty to those with something to pay.

“We are improving the PAYE system further through the introduction of Real Time Information (RTI), which will make it easier for employers and pension providers to administer as they will tell HMRC about PAYE payments at the time they are made – as opposed to only at the end of the year – reducing the need for corrective actions at a later stage.”

If you pass certain HMRC security checks, the Taxes Helpline will confirm an employee tax code and accept certain information impacting on a tax code. The only employee information HMRC will disclose is the tax code. They'll not be able to discuss a tax code in any detail or provide any other information relating to an employee. Please have your employee's National Insurance number with you when you phone.

The Taxes Helpline number is 0845 300 0627 and it is open from 8.00 am to 8.00 pm, Monday to Friday and 8.00 to 4.00 pm on Saturday

If you've passed the HMRC security checks, they will accept information that could impact on an employee tax code. They will accept the following information to update their records: - details of new employment and the date it started - employee works or payroll number The Taxes Helpline can't tell you why a tax code has changed, but they'll explain the reason to your employee. HMRC has published an online calculator which can be used to estimate the amount of Income Tax and National Insurance contributions an individual can expect to pay on their income.

It does not include other taxes such as corporation tax and is aimed at people who only pay tax through Pay As You Earn (PAYE).

Important points about the calculator :

 It doesn’t provide a result that is legally binding, nor is it a demand for payment. Remember, it is just an estimate.
