Film Screenings “Midnight in Paris” Thursday, August 28, 7 p.m. This Oscar-winning film centers on Gil Pender (Owen Wilson), a Hollywood screenwriter and aspiring novelist. While on a trip to Paris with his fiancée (Rachel McAdams), he begins exploring the city alone at night. On one of these evening strolls, he encounters a group of strange — yet familiar — revelers, who sweep him along, apparently back in time, for a night with some of the Jazz Age’s icons of art and literature. 2011, PG-13, 94 min. “Joan Mitchell: Portrait of an Abstract Painter” Thursday, September 11, 7 p.m. This elegantly edited film weaves together interviews with Mitchell and other leading painters and critics with interpretive sequences representing earlier chapters in Mitchell’s life while letting her paintings dominate the film. In this talk, Eddie Opara, a partner at Pentagram, will share how he and his team created a bold strategic and visual rebrand for the museum, rooted in wonder, curiosity and contemporary expression. Andrew Ladis Memorial Trecento Conference Thursday and Friday, October 23 and 24 This conference is held every other year in honor of art historian Andrew Ladis (1949 – 2007), Franklin Professor of Art History at the Lamar Dodd School of Art and a key figure in the development of our museum’s collection from the 1980s to early 2000s. The conference is the only gathering of its kind, emphasizing 14th-century Italian art as a fruitful area of research and academic dialogue. The conference is organized by the museum in collaboration with the Trecento Forum, a network of scholars dedicated to advancing studies in how art was created and experienced in late medieval Italy. Her doctoral research focuses on gender, the domestic environment and affective religious devotion. She will discuss the museum’s Kress Collection through the lens of her research. Artful Conversation: Zebedee B. Armstrong’s “Calendar on VW Hubcap” Wednesday, October 1, 2 p.m. Artful Conversation programs are 30 minutes long, focus on just one work of art and provide opportunities for close looking, open-ended dialogue and discovery. Student Spotlight Tour: Keaton Marek Sunday, October 26, 2 p.m. Join us for a walking concert with pieces performed throughout the museum. Keaton Marek is completing his doctor of musical arts in composition degree at UGA’s Hugh Hodgson School of Music. For his first of two degree recitals, he explores the influence of visual art on the creation of musical compositions. The recital will feature several chamber music pieces directly inspired by works of visual art at the Georgia Museum of Art.
