Congratulations to all students for their wonderful efforts this term. What we have seen is large amounts of collaboration, cooperation, teamwork and best efforts in college life. What we have noticed is a marked improvement in attendance, goal setting, academic performance, student voice and behaviour. What we really like is student preparedness to ask difficult questions, challenge themselves in areas of learning they have found difficult to navigate, make others around them accountable for their actions and lead by example. There are have been many individual and team highlights to reflect these practices. Hopefully, each one of our students is willing to share a success at school with you from this term. Whilst we congratulate the tremendous achievements of our Term Two award winners, there are students who have worked way above their past levels and this will be evident in their Semester One Reports. I implore all families to complete the parent survey from school council. This will give us guidance on the best ways to communicate with you, build you in to our college programs and encourage you to actively participate in college life when you can. Similarly, we have launched our inaugural College Alumni with our 2022 graduating class earlier this week to kick start a journey where we intend to capture our past students so that they can have a vehicle to meet, re - acquaint and provide skills and resources to support our students beyond the

classrooms. We understand the demands on families are huge and cumbersome, however schools are only as great as their community. We have a wonderful opportunity to work in tandem to provide educational programs that inspire, engage and extend our students to heights that in the end will lead to high levels of academic performance and sustained community involvement. You would have seen the works on the secondary campus in recent times. A new language centre is being established to develop our educational precinct. New arrivals will be enrolled to develop their english language skills for between six to twelve months before they move into mainstream schools. It is envisaged that the school will be ready and open to begin term three with about 100 students and staff. Please be aware of the additional traffic and pedestrians during key school times. I have met with our local member for Mill Park, the Hon Lily D ’ Ambrosio to seek her support for some additional infrastructure with traffic safety, college signage on Plenty Road and a review of the school zone supplemented on the government “ Find My School Webpage ”. In addition, we are preparing a submission for a major redevelopment of our STEM Centre on the secondary campus to accommodate for senior students in the sciences and some new VETs. Lily is a wonderful supporter of our college and avails herself to us on short notice even with her busy schedule. It is with both a great deal of sadness and joy that we thank and farewell Gemma Albress from the primary campus. After five incredible years of service to us, Gemma has been provisionally appointed to the Assistant Principal position at William Ruthven PS. Gemma has regenerated literacy in our college and has led significant improvements in learning strategies and programs. The promotion is very well deserved and though we will miss her organisation and energy, we wish her all the very best with her career and future. Thank You Gemma. Finally, Marcus will be Acting College Principal for the first three weeks of Term 3 as I will be taking some long service leave. Thank you to all of our Lakes families for your ongoing support and I look forward to seeing you at the exciting school production at Plenty Ranges on August 1 or 2, or at the increasing number of college events throughout the remainder of the year.

This week we celebrate Lakes Legend, George for his 35 years of service.

George is still as passionate as ever about numeracy, still committed to students and their learning as his first day on the job, still loyal to public education and always available to problem solve and look for improvements.

We are lucky to have his experience, leadership and dedication at The Lakes. We are proud of you, George!

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter COLLEGE CONNECTIONS

We are thrilled to update you on the addition of a new campus for the Collingwood English Language School. The new campus will be adjacent to The Lakes South Morang College. It will have three new permanent modular buildings – two classrooms and an administration building. It will also include an accessible bathroom. Installation of these buildings is now underway, and a site map (right) shows the layout of the new campus.

ABOUT THE COLLINGWOOD ENGLISH LANGUAGE SCHOOL

Collingwood English Language School (CELS) offers an intensive English Language program as part of the New Arrivals Program provided by the Department of Education (DE). Students will attend the program for between 6 and 12 months depending on their educational background and refugee status. CELS is a multi campus school, with locations in Collingwood, Broadmeadows and Craigieburn. CELS is excited to be opening its fourth campus on the site of The Lakes South Morang.

SCHOOL COUNCIL REPORT

Hello all,

Firstly, a big thank you to parents/carers who have completed our Parent/Carer Engagement Survey. The number of responses and feedback received so far has been incredibly valuable and has helped immensely with understanding our parent/carers thoughts on how we can engage better. Alternatively, clicking this link will also work: https://forms.office.com/r/cLJ9bQBLQq As mentioned in my last School Council Report, a big ‘ hot topic ’ for School Council this year has been increasing parent/ carer engagement, both through social family events/fundraising and in the classrooms. Whilst it has always been something in the back of our minds for the past 15 months, the message came out loud and clear in the 2022 School Review that this needed to be an area of focus. We are also excited to announce that after a long hiatus, we have re - started an interim Fundraising Sub - Committee and we are hoping to have our first activity during Term 3.

In other news, at School Council ’ s most recent meeting on 13 June, we:

• Heard that our uniform supplier is currently sourcing a children ’ s spray jacket. This was in response to our student reps report at the May School Council meeting requesting a waterproof jacket as part of school uniform; • Discussed concerns around local school zoning and the number of feeder primary schools currently allocated to our Secondary Campus. School Council will now advocate to the Department of Education to review our zone; • Heard about our Executive Leadership ’ s team meeting with our local Member of Parliament, Lily D ’ Ambrosio, about issues and challenges for our school;

• Had a status update on quotes obtained for refurbishing the Primary Campus toilets; and

• Had a status update on the Primary Campus ’ s front gate and the new kiss and drop zone on The Lakes Boulevard, to commence in Term 3. Council meets twice per term on a Tuesday at 5:30pm and visitors and observers are always welcome!

SENIOR SCHOOL PRINT AND COPY

We understand that having convenient access to photocopying and printing facilities can be crucial for our senior school students. To cater to their academic needs, we are pleased to announce that we have made photocopying and printing services available to them! From now on, students in Years 10, 11, and 12 can access these services on our Secondary campus. Students should speak to the office staff about obtaining printing credits. Our I.T. team have created instructions that will be distributed and are available to assist in device setup and troubleshooting.

MANAGING SCREEN TIME ON IPADS AND WINDOWS DEVICES

In today's digital age, it is essential for students to develop healthy habits when it comes to using technology. As iPads and Windows devices are widely used at our school on Primary and Secondary campuses respectively, we believe it's important to educate both students and parents/cares about responsible screen time management. On iPads, students can utilise the built - in Screen Time feature. This powerful tool allows them to set app limits, schedule downtime, and restrict certain types of content. By encouraging students to use Screen Time effectively, we can help them strike a balance between educational activities and other aspects of their lives. For Windows users, a similar feature called Family Safety is available. Family Safety enables parents to manage screen time, set content filters, and review activity reports. By leveraging this tool, families can ensure that their children are using Windows devices responsibly and maximising their academic potential. We strongly encourage parents and carers to have open conversations with their children about the importance of responsible device usage. Together, we can foster a positive digital environment that promotes learning and wellbeing.

SPORTS SCOREBOARD

SECONDARY SPORT June 14th was a great day out at Kilmore Racing track for the Regional cross country finals. Our Lakes legends ran their hearts out with both Charlotte and Brodie qualifying for the State championships later this year. Congratulations to all students who ran and made us proud.

PRIMARY INTERSCHOOL SPORT

As I write this paragraph our 5/6 students have one match remaining to be played for the term 2 interschool sport series, in either AFL, netball or handball. If our netballers can pull off one final victory they will win our district and will be headed to the division finals held in term 3! A fantastic effort!

If our handball teams can both come away with a win, they will come runners up in our district!

PRIMARY SWIMMING Next term our King Swim program will commence on Tuesdays, beginning WEEK 1, information about what to bring will be sent out to families in the last week off term 2. Thanks to all families who responded and returned paperwork in a timely manner.

SRC SPENDING

The Primary SRC students have been very busy this year raising money for The Lakes. They ’ ve been busy organising events such as Crazy Hair Day to raise awareness and money for Cystic Fibrosis. The money that was raised from Zooper Dooper Fridays went to classroom resources chosen by SRC students, which included board games, magic sand, fidget toys, bean bags and headphones. The rest of the money will be used to support our end of year event in Term 4. Watch this space!

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter KISS AND DROP ZONE

Safety at The Lakes South Morang College is of utmost importance, please note with this in mind there will be some changes to our Kiss & Drop Zone in the morning on the Primary Campus.

As of the start of Term 3, parents/carers will not be able to access the staff carpark to drop students off. The Kiss & Drop Zone will now be via the slip lane on Lakes Boulevard (See below photo) and students can enter through the single gates near the SDS buildings. Students can still access the single gate on Gordons Road as normal but the double gates in the carpark will remain closed as of this date. As of 8:30 am and from 2.30pm the Staff Carpark will be locked. There are numerous car - parking areas all within walking distance, we recommend using the carparks in front of the school, at Coles or at The South Morang Football Oval which is a short 2 - 5 minute walk to the school. Please remember to use the official crossings on Lakes Boulevard or the two on Gordon ’ s Road when crossing the road.

Our Kiss & Drop Zone works well when we follow the rules. It is an effective and efficient way of dropping off in the morning. There are a few steps we need to follow to make this work:

1. Two - minute parking between 8:00 – 9:00 am and then again between 3:00 – 4:00pm.

Move forward so that other cars can park safely.

Stay in your car to let your child out.

4. Always let your child in & out from the passenger side – never the driver ’ s side.

5. If there are no places to park, go around again until a park is available.

6. Use other long - term parking that is within a short walking distance to the school.

Be patient & observant.

Safety before convenience.

We urge you to teach your children great care when exiting from or entering your vehicle when you deliver or pick them up.

BELONGINGS, AMBULANCE & INSURANCE Private property brought to school by students, staff or visitors is not insured and the Department of Education does not accept any responsibility for any loss or damage. Parents and carers are reminded that the Department of Education does not provide personal accident insurance or ambulance cover for students. Parents and carers of students who do not have student accident insurance/ ambulance cover are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including the cost of ambulance attendance/transport and any other transport costs. CURRICULUM CHARGES We can see that many parents/carers have began to make financial contributions towards the 2023 Curriculum Contributions through QKR Payments. The College is most appreciative of the continued support and commitment shown by families through their contributions. Your financial contributions are what enables our College to operate and deliver the best possible education and support for our students. With exciting upgrades happening throughout both campuses this year including new carpets, sporting facilities, fencing, lockers and upgrades of toilet facilities, it is important that we work together to provide the best facilities for our wonderful students.

ATTENDANCE - EVERY DAY COUNTS If you are aware that your child will not be attending school due to illness or other circumstances, please ensure that you contact either office to ensure our attendance records are accurate. Ways of communicating absences include:

Placing a future Absence Request through the Parent SENTRAL Portal;

Calling the office;

•

Sending an SMS on 0427 226 537.

•

As required by the Department of Education, all schools must notify parents/carer informing that their child is absent. Please inform the office of absences before 10:00 am each morning.

STAY CONNECTED

The Sentral Parent Portal is the primary method for home - school communications at The Lakes.

We are excited to say that most families have access to the Parent Portal. The portal allows students and parents\carers to keep up to date with important information and communication. This includes student academic reports, parent - teacher interview bookings and permission for students to attend camps, sport and excursions.

The Student and Parent Portal can be accessed at school, from home and from mobile devices. If you are experiencing any issues with Sentral, please contact either office to assist you.
