The Pond By Andrew Lawrence
Although The Pond series is composed of three individual paintings, together they form a single work. The Pond marks a departure from much of my previous work and a turning point in the trajectory of the work that I have done since. I have frequently returned to some of the themes that I first established in The Pond. The two most important of these themes are the process and the subject matter. The process of combining charcoal subjects with stylized backgrounds featuring large blocks of solid color has become an important feature of the work I am doing now. Although I have focused more heavily on portraits of friends and family in recent years, these mixed media frequently play the same role.
