In terms of subject matter, when I’m not painting portraits, images and symbols of the freshwater ecosystems of the Great Lakes basin are ever-present. Nostalgic memories of growing up on a lake in southeast Michigan inspire my constant return to these subject matter. The Pond is the common ancestor of the two main branches of my work: a mixed media style blending realism with graphic design qualities, and the subject matter themes of the Great Lakes. The Pond is an important context for how I think about the evolution of my work, and it functions as a signpost that points me in the direction of the most authentic expression of my creative sensibilities.
