F IL M E V A N G E L IS M continued fact that a film’s effectiveness as a s o u l - w i n n i n g medium could be squelched by men who did not know how to use it to advantage.’A shabby' projection . . . improper presentation of the invitation following the show ing . . . poor promotion that did not alert unsaved people to come and see . . . these things could make the finest production a dismal failure as a method of evangelism. Out of nec essity, therefore, a new type of evan gelist— one trained especially to use Christian films—made his appearance. When “Mr. Texas,” billed as the “World’s First Christian Western,” was produced, parts of Hollywood laughed at young evangelist Billy Graham. On a squashed budget . . . hardly enough to pay the light bill in a Hollywood production . . . he had released a film that was to be pre miered in the Hollywood Bowl! They remembered that the best of tech nicians at major studios had spent thousands of dollars at the Bowl in an effort to premiere a film there. They had given it up as an impos sible task. Besides, even an all-star revue with top Hollywood personal ities had not been able to half-fill the natural amphitheater. “Mr. Texas,” they forecast, would be a source of laughter for some time to come around the industry. They came to laugh. They left soberly. The sight of 25,000 people in the stands, and thousands addi tional who sat on the ground when the last seat had been taken, was fantastic. The perfect projection on a specially built screen, the beautiful sound with hardly an echo, was sup posedly impossible. But the disturbing thing had been the heart-tug, the conviction of sin, the compelling force of the film, that brought more than 400 to the front of the Bowl in sur render of their lives to Christ, that sent thousands away to face sleepless night hours as they wrestled with the conflict of their soul. The Billy Graham team had been confident that God would use the film, however, long before that momentous night. Each scene had been bathed in prayer as Christian actors, ac tresses, cameramen and producer, joined their hearts . . . as well as their talents . . . for the glory of God. So it was that, from its conception and birth, the first film produced expressly for evangelism began a min istry that has already drawn over six million people to aud i t or i ums , churches, outdoor arenas and school gymnasiums. More than 150,000 lives have been changed by His transform ing power at the invitations that follow the showings of the film.
