Meanwhile, she was pastor of the first established Church of Christ, Scientist; president of the first Chris tian Scientist Association convening monthly; publisher of her own works and editor of the Christian Science Journal.” She early learned the power of the printed word. Beginning with a pamphlet in 1870, she wrote about 15 books and published not only the Christian Science Journal but also a weekly and a daily newspaper. Her masterpiece was the book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, which contains the basic teachings of Christian Science. I will include another bit of Mrs. Eddy’s personal history for the sake of those who ask the question so frequently: “What of her various marriages?” In 1843, Mary Baker married Major George W. Glover, a contractor, who died six months later; her son and only child, George W. Glover, was bom three months after wards. In 1853, Mary Baker Glover married Dr. Daniel Patterson, a den tist. This marriage ended in divorce 10 years later. Then in 1877, Mary Baker Glover Patterson was wed to Asa Gilbert Eddy, who became an ardent Christian Scientist. He died in 1882. For one so much-married, Mrs. Eddy had very weird and un- scriptural views of marriage, with which I will later deal in this article. The entire system is based upon the delusion that the physical universe does not exist and therefore nothing is real. In other words, it is a re ligion of complete negation. All mat ters that pertain to this life and the life beyond are related to this denial of reality, which the Scriptures have defined very well as “ oppositions of science falsely so called: which some professing have erred concerning the faith” (1 Tim. 6:20,21).
LOUIS T. TALBOT About the Author A ustralian-born Dr. Louis T. Talbot has for years been one of America’s strongest pro- claimers of evangelical Chris tianity. He is a noted writer (10 books; numerous pamphlets and magazine articles), pastor (for 20 years at the Church of the Open Door in Los Angeles) and educator (long-time presi dent, now chancellor, of the Bible Institute of Los Angeles and Talbot Theological Semi nary). Dr. Talbot and his research ers have made a wide study on cults and false religions. For years he has presented his illus trated sermons on this subject to audiences the world over. Just completed this summer, this series represents years of work. It is believed to be the most complete and certainly the most up-to-date work on the subject. Now I want you to examine with me Mrs. Eddy’s statements. The ma jor portion of the quotations will be from Science and Health which I will indicate as S & H. Since this book has undergone many revisions, I confine myself to three representa tive versions: the 28th edition of 1887, the 74th of 1893, and the 1906 (copyright renewed in 1934), which is the edition in current use. Obvious ly there were no later revisions after Mrs. Eddy’s death for there was no further light from heaven so far as Christian Scientists were concerned. CONTINUED ►
