Not only does Mrs. Eddy claim divine inspiration for her book, but she questions the reliability of the Bible: “ Arrogant ignorance and pride . . . have dimmed the glory and power of the Scriptures to which this Christian Science textbook is the key” (p. 92, Miscellaneous Writings). “ The decisions, by vote of Church Councils, as to what should or should not be considered Holy Writ; the manifest mistakes in the ancient ver sions; the 30 thousand different read ings in the Old Testament, and the 300 thousand in the New—these facts show how a mortal and material sense stole into the divine record, darken ing, to some extent, the inspired pages with its own hue” (S & H, p. 33, 74th Ed.). “ She [Mrs. Eddy] affirmed that the Scriptures cannot be interpreted in a literal way . . . The literal rendering of the Scriptures makes them nothing valuable, but often is the foundation of unbelief and hopelessness. The metaphysical rendering is health and peace and hope for all” (p. 169, Mis cellaneous Writings). Do these statements sound much like the claims that we just quoted to the effect that she “ planted her self unreservedly on the teachings of Jesus” and that “ the Bible was her only authority?” Here she casts doubt upon both its origin and content, proving not only the contradictory nature of her teaching, but its falsity. We believe that though men set down the words, God by His Spirit dictated the original text, and that He not only preserved that text from error, but protected it from its ene mies throughout the ages, that it might reach hearts and influence lives for Christ in every generation. And as for the peace they bring, we read in Romans 15:4: “ For whatso ever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.” She wrests the meaning of the Word of God, against which we have been warned in First Peter 3:16; in a statement like this: “ The Holy City, described in the Apocalypse as com ing down from God out of Heaven, is Christian Science” (S <&H, p. 225, 28th Ed.). Here is one of her many render ings of the Lord’s Prayer: “ Principle, eternal and harmonious, Nameless and adorable intelligence, Thou art ever present and supreme. And when this supremacy of Spirit shall appear, the dream of matter will disappear.
