Message From The Master: Dr Joseph Spence ..........................................................................................................

great. I have taken to describing a Dulwich Education as “thoroughly modern; absolutely traditional,” meaning our heritage is rich with inspirational stories (exemplified in many of the obituaries of the Old Alleynians honoured in this issue of the Yearbook), which give ours boys the courage to look to a future when they will be pioneers, public servants and men of “good learning.” In the year ahead we will bid farewell to Simon Northcote-Green, who leaves us after 27 years of service. Simon was appointed to join the English department in September 1989. During his time here he has held the positions of Master in Charge of Hockey and Cricket; Housemaster of Raleigh and of Blew House; and, from 2000, Deputy Master Pastoral. Finally, I want to thank you for reading this publication and continuing to engage with Dulwich College. Many of you attend our events, offer to come back to address or mentor our boys, and thousands of you have supported the College over the years. As we approach our 400th anniversary, my vision is that we will embark on a “New Dulwich Experiment,” greatly increasing our bursary provision. I am proud that the College is academically selective and socially inclusive, and appreciate that our community of OAs, parents, pupils, current and former staff, and friends of the College support us in our mission. I ask you this: if you have yet to connect, please do, in whatever capacity you are able. If you are already a committed volunteer, donor, ambassador and advocate, thank you. Perhaps you might bring a friend along to the next sporting or society gathering, professional networking meeting or class reunion? In this year, the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, I shall use his words to encourage you to act, to become involved, to keep Dulwich exemplary: “Joy’s soul lies in the doing.”

Dear Old Alleynian,

I write from my Study where the splendour of the Barry Buildings is now reflected in the windows of the College’s new home for Science and Art, “The Laboratory”. As the days lengthen, the mid- afternoon sun bounces off the terracotta, old and new, intensifying the “Dulwich glow” you all know so well. I invite you, most warmly, to return for Founder’s Day, 2 July, when the completed project will be open for the first time for informal “walk-throughs”. For those of you who cannot return to Dulwich, I encourage you to visit our website for photographs, stories and films, which capture the exploration and discovery taking place each day in this splendid new facility and elsewhere around the College. As boys make their way to sporting fixtures and society meetings (the calendar brims with visits from speakers including, recently, William Shawcross, the Chair of the Charity Commission, Gus O’Donnell, the former Cabinet Secretary, and the novelist John Lanchester), I am assured that Alleynians today are being well- prepared for the future while appreciating the history and tradition that has long made this institution

As ever,

Dr Joseph Spence www.dulwich.org.uk
