TROPICAL TACTICS: PALM TREES & STRATEGIES The City of Sunrise has long been recognized as a leader in community and scholastic chess programs. This year, we’re celebrating our annual Chess Calendar Art Contest by blending two things our community knows best: a passion for chess and the beauty of our tropical hometown. Chess and creativity share common ground. Whether you’re planning your next move across the board or imagining palm-shaded battlegrounds where rooks, knights, and queens come to life, both require patience, imagination, and strategic thinking. For the City’s 2026 Chess Calendar, we invited Sunrise students to explore the theme “Tropical Tactics: Palm Trees & Strategies.” Their artwork captures whimsical scenes where chess pieces blend naturally and entertainingly into South Florida’s colorful landscapes. You’ll find ideas like geckos sliding pawns into place, coconut-carved rooks guarding sandy shores, flamingos and butterflies perched near chessboards, and kings and queens relaxing beneath sunlit palm fronds. Each drawing reflects the warmth, vibrancy, and creativity of our community’s young artists. Plan out your year with our event calendar listed along the side of
SUNRISE IS A CHESS CITY Open-Play Chess FREE , supervised open play is offered every Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to noon at the Sunrise Athletic Complex (SAC) Multipurpose Center, located at 11501 NW 44th Street. All ages and skill levels are welcome, with FREE INSTRUCTION from the Sunrise Center for Excellence in Chess. (954) 747-4604.
