Camofleur! Experimental archaeology

DAZZLE WORKSHOP Year 6 had a special visitor - Mr Whitehead the WW2 Camofleur expert. He came to teach the children about Dazzle painting. Children used professional paints, Gouache, to create their own designs. Through a process of experimental archaeology, everyone designed and painted a wooden ship and tested the effectiveness of the designs through a periscope. The deigns were used in WW2 to confuse enemies attempting to target the vessels for attack. The project is funded by Heritage Lottery and we are grateful to have been chosen to try this amazing activity. Thanks to Kitty, Katie and Florence in 6V for the story. Ed - During and after World War I, navies experimented with elaborate camouflage schemes intended to conceal ships on a distant horizon. Design artists were called ‘Camofleurs’ and often developed striped ‘dazzle camouflage’ PLANET PROTECTORS Last week, Year 4 visited the Sea Life Centre to kick start their 'planet protectors' topic. The children are all now feeling very passionate about our oceans and the impact humans are having, not only on our sea life, but also ourselves! Did you know that green sea turtles often eat floating plastic bags, mistaking them for jelly fish? Did you know that if our fish are eating plastic, then we are too? Did you know that over 70 million sharks are killed for their fins every year, just to make soup? 4P were also extremely lucky to bump into wildlife presenter, Chris Packham, who gave the children a short talk on his life and top tips to help look after our planet.

Thanks to Mr. Postin for the story.
