Complex Elbow Reconstruction Restores Functionality in Pediatric Patient

I n a remarkable display of surgical precision and expertise, the Paley Middle East Clinic at BMC recently managed a highly complex case involving a 13-year-old patient with a severe elbow injury. The patient was presented with a poorly healed bone and significant nerve damage following an open high-energy trauma. Upon arrival at BMC, the team led by Dr. Michael Uglow, Director of the Paley Middle East Clinic and Consultant Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon, took on the challenge of performing an intricate reconstructive surgery. The operation involved careful dissection of extensive scar tissue that had tethered the neurovascular bundle, as well as decompression of the ulnar and median nerves and repair of the brachial artery. The reconstruction of the elbow was successfully completed using a double plating technique, complemented by a strut graft from the patient’s iliac crest bone. Post-surgery, the patient’s nerves were functioning normally, and the hand was well-perfused, marking a turning point in her recovery journey.
