GNAT UK Robotic Demolition - Abrasive Cold Cutting
Remote Operated Abrasive Cold Cutting is a technique we use to cut materials, especially metals, without generating heat, making it ideal for use in volatile areas with flammable gases, liquids, or combustible materials. Abrasive cold cutting provides a safe, precise and highly effective solution for cutting in hazardous environments, eliminating the dangers linked to traditional hot work methods Gnat UK’s Abrasive Jetting Teams were recently deployed to deconstruct two large columns within a Top Tier COMAH Petro-Chemical Site
Owing to the volatile on-site constraints, hot works procedures were prohibited and GNAT UK was tasked with supporting our client in utilising our specialist cold cutting systems.

Our unique abrasive cold cutting manipulators were attached to the full circumference of the vessel for the main cut lines to isolate each individual section prior to removal by crane. ( above ) A similar project (righ t) required the Deconstruction of Stainless Steel Pressure Vessels within a COMAH site GNAT UK was assigned the task of deploying our abrasive jetting systems to isolate the vessel sections. Using cold cutting manipulators, we made precise access holes to allow safe entry into the vessels. Once each section was isolated, they could be safely removed using cranes. To meet the requirements of the main contractor and the client's safety project management teams, our teams operated around the clock as needed.

Utilising high-pressure water jets, they remove concrete with precision, minimising damage to the underlying structures and reinforcing steel. Gnat’s remote operated Aquajet and ERGO systems offer a safe, cost effective, vibration-free method for removing concrete from bridge decks, road surfaces, runways, dam walls, tunnels, docks, harbours, multi-storey car parks, and more! Reservoir Sluice Hydrodemolition This challenging project, at a 60 million cubic meter reservoir, involved removing defective concrete from the steeply inclined over fl ow sluice's sides, and fl oor. Gnat UK, collaborating with the main contractor, used our Aquajet Hydrodemolition Robots to safely remove the defective concrete while preserving the rebar. Environmental Considerations Hydrodemolition is ef fi cient, cost-effective & environmentally friendly. It signi fi cantly reduces noise pollution and eliminates fl ying debris and dust pollution, minimising the risk of silicosis.

CASE STUDY: Railway Viaduct Railway Viaduct Refurbishment ( left ) Remedial work is required to reinforce the foundations of this Victorian Railway Viaduct. Our Diamond Wire Sawing teams are tasked with creating openings through 15 of the sandstone and masonry pier bases, to enable the Main Contractor to instal Steel UB Needle Structural Beams - 15 Piers require strengthening and each pier requires 10 Aperture Cuts.. CASE STUDY: Hydrodemolition & Wire Sawing ( top, right ) Our Hydrodemolition & Diamond Sawing Teams worked in tandem to cut, remove & refurbish a series of formidable concrete plinths in the well of a large factory complex. Our Hilti Diamond Wire Saws isolated the redundant pillars and sections. Our Aquajet Robots then removed surplus concrete from the floor areas and vertical sections of the remaining Plinths. This left the Re-Bars exposed, cleaned and prepared for the installation of new steel and concrete. Protecting the Environment Hydrodemolition is not only the most efficient method for protecting and preserving concrete, it’s also one of the safest, most environmentally friendly methods around. The Blast water produced was processed through our Siltbuster Decontamination Systems restoring the Ph-Balance and mitigating water pollution.
Case Study: Wire Sawing in a Major Sewage Complex (above ) This overhaul of a Major Sewer System in the heart of Glasgow necessitated the removal of 1.6 metre diameter, 25mm thick steel flumes. Being a vital component of Glasgow’s Sewage infrastructure, the Flumes were still live and flowing at 60% capacity with running effluent! Our remote operated HILTI Wire Saws Cut and Isolated the three steel work sections in the shortest possible time!
With a great team working to a strict coordinated plan, each isolation was completed in just over one hour.

A Case in Point One notable project required us to devise a safer and more cost- effective method for dismantling and removing the refractory lining from a very large vessel - traditional methods had proven inadequate. Vessels in the Process Industries typically have poor access, necessitating labour-intensive and hazardous manual debricking procedures. To overcome this, GNAT’s engineers devised a Remotely Operated Manipulator System . This system accessed and safely deconstructed the vessel's lining, including the roof, walls, and base. The schematic ( left ) illustrates the procedure, which we are now deploying on other projects that previously relied on conventional, time-consuming methods.

Controlled Silo Demolition on a Grade 1 listed Site Innovative demolition techniques were adopted by Gnat UK, when we were charged with the deconstruction of a concrete multi-celled storage silo located in a historically important 18th Century Flax Mill. Our robotic demolition machines were mounted on mast climber platforms, which were erected inside each cell. This combination was then used to systematically deconstruct the 500 tonne silo structure from the inside out, without causing any damage to the surrounding Grade-One Listed structures, which were situated just a metre away.
