Opening doors
How one Telford family found a new purpose and a new member of the household through Shared Lives. Across Telford and Wrekin, ordinary households are quietly transforming lives through Shared Lives, a scheme that matches adults with care and support needs with approved local carers, offering a home-from-home rather than a clinical setting. For carers like Bernie, who has welcomed a range of people into her home over the years, the scheme has reshaped daily life in ways she never expected. “I’ve always loved caring” Bernie says. “I’ve watched people do things I never thought they could do and watching them develop in their skills day to day is fantastic. I’ve met so many incredible people, and I can honestly say I love each and every one of them.” The Shared Lives team says arrangements like Bernie’s reflect a wider shift towards community-based, person-centred care – one that values independence, choice and genuine relationships over institutional routine. Prospective carers don’t need professional care backgrounds, just spare room, patience and warmth. Full training, a generous allowance and ongoing support from a dedicated team are provided throughout. With demand for places rising, the Council is encouraging Telford and Wrekin residents curious about fostering-style care for adults to come forward.
