WELCOME It is our honor to announce the 2025 NAS Oceana Air Show featuring the Navy’s elite flight demonstration team, the Blue Angels, top-tier naval aviators, world-class aerobatic pilots, and fun for the entire family! The NAS Oceana Air Show, which is free and open to the public, is our opportunity to give back to our military families and our community. Each year, we welcome visitors from across the country and around the world to the Navy’s East Coast Master Jet Base, providing them with a front-row seat to the incredible capabilities of naval aviation and the opportunity to meet the extraordinary people who serve our nation. In addition to the Blue Angels, this year’s lineup includes demonstrations from the F-22 Raptor and F-35C Lightning II Demonstration Teams, and the Rhino Demonstration Team from the Gladiators of VFA-106, home-based right here at NAS Oceana. This is a big milestone year for the Navy, as 2025 marks the Navy’s 250th birthday! Correspondingly, this year’s Air Show theme celebrates 250 years of freedom on the high seas, 250 years of a stabilizing presence for international commerce, and 250 years of honor and prosperity. What better way to celebrate our birthday than with the roar of afterburner, and the thrill of aerobatic maneuvers performed by incredibly talented pilots! This year, our theme reflects not only the history and tradition of our Navy, but also the innovative spirit of Naval Aviation—which continues to inspire future generations of American youth. The Oceana Air Show is about more than just aerial demonstrations. It’s about shaping the future. Since 2016, the NAS Oceana Air Show
has proudly hosted one of the largest Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Education Field Trips in the Region, inviting students from area schools to experience aviation and technology up close during our expansive STEM Laboratory. We are thrilled to once again welcome thousands of fifth graders from Virginia Beach City Public Schools and Chesapeake Public Schools to NAS Oceana’s Apollo Soucek Field for their annual STEM Education Field Trip during the air show’s practice day. On Friday, Sept. 19, more than 8,000 elementary students from Virginia Beach City and Chesapeake Public Schools will attend this one-of-a-kind, immersive STEM experience, where they will get an exclusive sneak peek of the NAS Oceana Air Show as performers practice while engaging in hands-on STEM activities that spark their curiosity and interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Our goal is simple: Create leaders, explorers, and innovators—and have a lot of fun in the process! We look forward to
celebrating 250 years of America’s Navy and inspiring the leaders of tomorrow at the 2025 NAS Oceana Air Show.

NAVAL AIR STATION OCEANA ABOUT
For 80 years, NAS Oceana, Dam Neck Annex, and Naval Auxiliary Landing Field Fentress have provided world-class support to Navy and Joint operating forces. What began as a remote military auxiliary landing field, Oceana rose to meet the tremendous demands on naval aviation during World War II and beyond. Today, the Navy’s East Coast Master Jet Base is the second largest employer in the City of Virginia Beach, and is a proud member of the Hampton Roads community. The airfields of NAS Oceana and NALF Fentress represent strategic resources within America’s Navy. One of nine Class IV Naval airport systems in the Navy, and one of the busiest airports in the entire region, NAS Oceana on a typical day supports about 600 operations for 17 squadrons and four Carrier Air Wings. Our Air Traffic Controllers work 10,000 cubic miles of airspace providing safe and expeditious
flow of air traffic. Our terminal supports an average of 520 Navy Air Logistics Office requests, accounting for an average of 21,000 passengers, 1,200,000
pounds of baggage, and 850,000 pounds of cargo. The transient line supports 1,800 aircraft annually. Meanwhile, Dam Neck Annex is home to numerous training schoolhouses and Joint commands, and services 15,000 Sailors yearly. The NAS Oceana team proudly maintains its “Fleet, Fighter, and Family” ethos with a commitment to sailor support and customer service, which extends into our neighboring communities through highly cooperative outreach initiatives like the NAS Oceana Air Show.

PERFORMERS: The U.S. Navy Blue Angels
In 1946, the Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Chester Nimitz, had a vision to create a flight exhibition team to raise the public’s interest in naval aviation and boost Navy morale. In the 1940s, The U.S. Navy Blue Angels thrilled audiences with their precision combat maneuvers in the F6 Hellcat, the F8 Bearcat and the F9 Panther. During the 1950s, the Blue Angels refined their demonstration with aerobatic maneuvers in the F9 Cougar and F-11 Tiger, and introduced the first six- plane delta formation, still flown to this day. By the end of the 1960s, the Blue Angels were flying the F-4 Phantom, the only two seat aircraft flown by the delta formation. In 1974, they transitioned to the A-4 Skyhawk, a smaller and lighter aircraft with a tighter turning radius
allowing for a more dynamic flight demonstration. In 1986, the Blue Angels celebrated their 40th anniversary by unveiling the Boeing F/A-18 Hornet. In 2021, they transitioned to their current aircraft the Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet and celebrated their 75th anniversary. In 1949, it became necessary for the Blue Angels to operate a support aircraft to move personnel and equipment between show sites. These support aircraft included the Douglas R4D Skytrain, the Curtiss R5C Commando, the Douglas R5D Skymaster, and the Lockheed C-121 Super Constellation. In 1970, the team received the Lockheed Martin C-130, affectionately known as “Fat Albert.” In 2020, “Fat Albert” transitioned to its current platform, the C-130J Super Hercules.
A message from the Blue Angels
The goal of our Blue Angels’ team is to inspire a culture of excellence and service to country. We are representatives from the fleet, showcasing
the pride and professionalism of the United States Navy and Marine Corps. We are thrilled to perform demonstrations across the country, sharing our Navy and Marine Corps experiences with our fellow Americans, bringing Naval aviation to communities across the country that may not have a large military presence. Since 1946, it has been our honor to represent the hundreds of thousands of men and women who serve in the Navy and Marine Corps to audiences both at home and abroad, showcasing the excitement, precision, and power of Naval aviation. Our 158 active-duty Sailors and Marines uphold the rich tradition of excellence instituted by those who have served before us. Our goal for 2025 is to continue to inspire young men and women, not just to pursue a career in Naval aviation or the military, but to excel in all areas of their lives. Each performance provides the American public an opportunity to view the incredible capabilities of our service members serving aboard every ship, squadron, and unit in the United States Navy and Marine Corps. It is our goal to see that tomorrow’s leaders will be inspired and motivated by what they see our men and women accomplishing today.

PERFORMERS: F/A-18F Rhino Demo Team
The Rhino Demo Team showcases the mobility, versatility, and power of the U.S. Navy’s F/A-18F Super Hornet, nicknamed the “Rhino.” The nickname was borne out of a need to differentiate between the larger, more capable Super Hornet and the smaller, original “Legacy” Hornet during carrier-based operations. The Super Hornet has been in service with the U.S. Navy for over two decades, and through constant upgrades and modernization, this multi-role carrier-based aircraft continues to excel in the air-to-air and air-to-ground arenas. During the demonstration, the aircrew will experience nearly eight times the force of gravity, accelerate to speeds up to 750 mph, and showcase the incredible maneuvering capability of the F-18. Many of the maneuvers seen are used by Naval Aviators in the execution of air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, both in
training and in combat. The Rhino Demo Team is based at Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach, Va., and the aircrew and maintainers are members of the Navy’s largest squadron: VFA-106, known as the “Gladiators.” The aircrew serve as instructors, teaching new aircrew how to fly and tactically employ the Super Hornet. The maintenance personnel come from a variety of skill sets, known in the Navy as “rates,” and help to fix and maintain more than 50 aircraft.

PERFORMERS: Warbird Thunder Airshows
Warbird Thunder flies the SNJ aircraft manufactured by North American Aviation. The SNJ is a historically significant aircraft that was utilized as an advanced trainer by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps to train “The Greatest Generation” for WWII and Korean Conflict. Nearly every pilot in World War II and Korea trained in a variant of this aircraft. The Army Air Corps and later U.S. Air Force also flew the same aircraft but with the designation of “T-6 Texan.” More than 15,000 SNJ/T-6 aircraft were built, and it has
served in more than 60 countries worldwide – many times in combat by developing countries. The aircraft was retired from U.S. military service in the 1960s but was utilized around the world much longer. In fact, the South African military utilized the T-6 until 1995. Both aircraft are powered by 600-horsepower supercharged Pratt & Whitney R-1340 engines with a 9-foot Hamilton-Standard propeller. The signature “bark” a spectator hears is actually the tips of the propeller reaching the speed of sound.
