God’s Wandering Children (Part 12)

told him what we could, but other than describ- ing the statue there was not a lot we could say. This young man was truly the fulfillment of “THE BORN LOSER,” because he returned the next day. This time we got as much informa- tion as we could along with his license number. We contacted the sheriff and they paid him a visit, but he denied everything, of course, so there was nothing they could do. That area was very good for business and we were there for a few more weeks selling in Southwest Missouri and Northwest Arkansas. We did finally decide to go to Fort Smith, Arkansas. We were in Missouri when all this happened and when we crossed into Arkansas we stopped to pick up supplies. We parked in a mall parking lot and as we came out of the build- ing there was a police car sitting next to our truck. Both of our minds went to the same place — what did we do wrong!? When we got closer, we could see the squad car was from Missouri, not Arkansas. Not only was it from Missouri but it was the same deputies that we talked to weeks before. They recognized the truck and wanted to talk to us again. When they looked for us in Missouri, we had already left the area. They were convinced the young man they talked to was guilty and they were hoping we could give them a little more information. As we talked, Hadassah remembered she had written a brief descrip- tion of the statue in her daily diary. She went with the deputies to a bank that was in the mall area and had a copy of her notes made. She signed a statement stating what the de- scription was about. We left the area for many months, but the next time we came back through, we stopped at the couple’s trading post to see if anything had been done. We

were welcomed with open arms. With the notes from our diary that the deputies had copied, they were able to get a search warrant and they found the statue along with other items that had been stolen. The statue was being held as evidence, but the man was able to see and hold his prized possession once again. We found out later that he died before the statue could be re- turned, but he was grateful that he knew it would be back in his wife’s possession. That young man’s fate was sealed from the first day he showed us what he claimed was his prized

possession.

We all know people that have done illegal things and seem to get by with it and there are others, like this young man, that do things wrong and the Lord in- tervenes and exposes them. We can only hope and pray this young man realizes that be- neath it all it was the Lord that exposed his wrongdoings. (Numbers 32:23). “For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, ‘Fear not; I will help thee.’” (Isa- iah 41:13 KJV).

By Harry and Hadassah Wilkinson February 2026 Two damaged lives, a yellow truck, an open road, and a life we never could have imagined. Last month, I men- tioned we had met a couple, Randy and Kayla, who owned a veg- etable stand located on a busy highway in Southwest Missouri. They wanted us to set up and sell from their property. We did spend time with them on our trips through the area and met some very in- teresting people while we were there. The area we were in was known for coon hunting. In fact, the area across the highway was used for coon hunt- ing competition. Or, at least, it was at one time. One day, there were several helicopters above the woods and men repelling from them. The coon hunting association (for the sake of a better description) had banned the area from being used for hunts because it started to be used by people to grow marijuana and they protected their crop with a vengeance. The men repelling from the helicopters were law enforcement going in to clear out the fields and the people protecting them. An interesting hus- band and wife that lived locally stopped by one day and spent time vis- iting. I had heard of cave dwellers that lived long ago, but never from the present time. This woman’s family had lived in a cave in the area. She was actually born in a cave. It is hard

to comprehend people living that way today, but it was done and can be done again today. We pray it does not come to that again. That is in the Lord’s hands. There were several memorable people that stopped to visit and one of the most memorable was “THE BORN LOSER.” He was a young man about 20 years old. He had stopped more than once and thought that we would enjoy seeing a piece of his collection that he was quite proud of. He brought a beauti- ful hand carved statue that he said was worth several thousand dol- lars. He had a fascinat- ing story about the piece and how he came to own it. The workman- ship was fabulous! The very next day, an elderly couple that had a small trading post stopped and during our conversation, the man told us about being robbed a short time ago and a lot of turquoise and a valuable statue was taken. The statue was a piece he highly treasured. He was ter- minally ill and lamented that he would never see his statue again. He thought so much of this piece that he carried a picture of it all the time. He showed it to us and you can imagine our surprise when it was obvious that we had just seen his statue the day before. Out of his surprise and disap- pointment he was upset with us that we did not get his name, address, and phone number. He settled down right away and as soon as he left he called the sheriff’s of- fice. A deputy came to see us later that day and we
