A NOTE FROM SYLVIA September has arrived in Minnesota. Kids are back in school, summer activities are winding down, and apple picking season is in full swing. September also marks TPT’s anniversary. TPT first went on the air at 1:30 PM on September 16, 1957. Starting as KTCA, TPT has come a long way in its sixty-five years. I remember my time as a legal intern at TPT in the early 1990s when we had just moved into the Lowertown building. Now, it’s my honor to serve as TPT’s President and CEO and lead one of the Twin Cities’ premiere nonprofit organizations. In its sixty-five years, TPT has become a leading creator of national PBS productions. Facing Suicide , premiering this month, is a PBS documentary produced in-house by our incredibly dedicated TPT team. The film provides insight on the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, combining personal stories with science to understand why people attempt suicide and what can be done to prevent it. The Suicide Awareness Voices of Education (SAVE) complimented the documentary’s “message of recovery and hope.” Facing Suicide is a herculean effort. In addition to the film, TPT has partnered with ten PBS stations and leading suicide prevention organizations to create community-based initiatives across the country to amplify the impact of the film. TPT is also producing a Facing Suicide digital series premiering September 7 on youtube.com/PBS . This series is designed to raise awareness about suicide prevention among young adults. Mental health is such an important and timely issue in our communities, and TPT is proud to be a leader in addressing mental health issues through educational programming. I also want to acknowledge the start of Hispanic Heritage month, which begins September 15th. You can learn more about some of our great programming celebrating Hispanic Heritage at tpt.org/hispanic-heritage . More content showcasing Hispanic culture will be in next month’s magazine as we continue our celebration in October.

FACING SUICIDE A TWIN CITIES PBS ORIGINAL
E ach year tens of thousands of Americans take their own lives, and many more have thoughts of suicide. Facing Suicide , a new documentary from Twin Cities PBS, explores the stories of Americans impacted by suicide and journeys to the front lines of medical and scientific research to meet some of the people who are working to help those at risk. Timely and informative, the project aims to elevate and destigmatize the topic of suicide, offer a message of healing and hope, and empower
audiences and communities with prevention strategies.
Narrated by Josh Charles, the film shares the deeply personal stories of those directly affected by suicide, as well as insights from experts and researchers who are making a difference. An accompanying digital series, to be released on the PBS YouTube channel, works to create a space of understanding, hope and action for young people whose lives have been touched by suicide.

Q+A with Susan Thao UNDERSTORY DIGITAL SERIES PRODUCER
America Outdoors: Understory is the digital companion series to PBS’ America Outdoors with Baratunde Thurston . Both were produced right here at Twin Cities Public Television. We sat down with Susan Thao, the digital series producer, to learn more about her love of filmmaking and her experience making the series.

I also put a lot of my [Hmong] culture in the project too, so it was fun to see that come alive on the screen. UNDERSTORY IS ONE OF THE FIRST NATIONAL PBS PRODUCTIONS THAT YOU’VE WORKED ON. HOW WAS THE PROCESS FOR YOU? The process of making the series has been a really fun learning experience for me to work with PBS Digital Studios and learn how they function, which is so different from making a show for broadcast. WHAT’S BEEN THE MOST FUN THING ABOUT WORKING ON UNDERSTORY ? Baratunde is great. I would probably say he is the highlight of this project. I think what’s really nice about him is that he brings out that passion in his guests and makes each episode relatable to audiences who might not know as much about the outdoors. Also, the team is awesome. It’s a really collaborative project with a lot of creative and wonderful people. I’m excited for our audiences to watch it!
WHAT INITIALLY MADE YOU INTERESTED IN FILMMAKING?
What first piqued my interested in film- making was actually photography. I was really into this DSLR camera that my dad had gotten me. I started taking footage with the camera and learning how to put it all together and it just made sense to me. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PIECE THAT YOU’VE WORKED ON AT TPT? Wheat Allergy Leads to the Founding of Sunrise Flour Mill By Darrold Glanville and Martha Glanville
Sunrise Flour Mill grew out of our desire to help home bakers who struggle with gluten. We began selling our heritage flour at the local farmers market in 2011 or 2012, and people started realizing this flour was special.
Before we moved to rural North Branch in 2006, Darrold owned a small biotech company and Martha was a special education teacher in Minneapolis. We have a passion for cooking, baking, and sharing meals with others. As a retirement project, we ground our own flour using tabletop mills in a room attached to our garage. We ate some and sold the rest at a local farmers market.
By 2017, we were both in our 70s and had to decide whether to stop or get bigger. We chose the latter.
We hired a consultant who helped us secure a Minnesota Department of Agriculture grant, and bank loans. That enabled us to purchase a 5,200 square-foot building and hire a general manager with a background in e-commerce. We slowly added equipment and staff, which has allowed us to grow. We also added product lines; we are getting ready to launch some baking mixes.

Darrold started developing products to sell, so we were eating more wheat. He became increasingly achy and lethargic. Over a few months, he developed many health problems and doctors could not figure out why. Darrold began to question if modern wheat gluten might be to blame. Together, we went gluten-free. In just two days, Darrold felt better, and in two months he was symptom-free. But we missed eating bread and pasta, so we tried to determine how we could get our favorite foods back. This is where our heritage wheat journey began. We tried spelt, emmer, and einkorn, among others. These heritage grains have some gluten, but we find them easier to digest than hybridized wheat varieties.
We still go to the Mill City Farmers Market. We have a presence in many coops, specialty stores and restaurants, but our primary sales channel is e-commerce. Sunrise Flour Mill is so much more than anything we ever thought it would be, and we wouldn't want it any other way. The Impact of Third Places for Solo Agers By Ailene Gerhardt
The role that a robust, age-diverse support system plays for a solo ager (an aging adult 55+ single or partnered, who is without the support of adult children or close family members) is critical. Connection to others is extremely important in navigating health, the complexities of the health care system, and residential, financial and legal decisions. For solo agers, identifying personal contacts and qualified professionals to serve in these key roles that are "traditionally" filled by adult children/relatives requires careful and intentional planning. It is equally important to be intentional about social support and connections. Being part of and connected to a community has a major impact on our health and personal satisfaction. Connecting with others assists with improving our self-esteem, feeling cared for, reducing stress and increasing our resilience. As we age, meeting new people becomes more difficult. After retirement, there is no longer the ease of making new connections via a work environment, and for solo agers, there are not additional connections available via the friends of children or grandchildren. Connecting with others assists with improving our self-esteem, feeling cared for, reducing stress and increasing our resilience. While it can be difficult to meet new people, we often overlook the impact of our connection to "third places," which can offer new opportunities to expand and enhance our support systems.
"Third places" is a term coined by urban sociologist Ray Oldenburg and refers to places where people spend time between home ("first" place) and work ("second" place). They are locations where we exchange ideas, have a good time, and build relationships. They are comfortable spaces and accessible to everyone. Third places are a part of our daily life and community, and we connect to them in a variety of ways. Some are free or low cost — parks, libraries, community and senior centers, faith communities, adult education and other classes, and volunteer organizations. Others are commercial establishments like restaurants, coffee shops and bookstores. They can also be places that offer personal services such as salons, barbershops, and gyms. Approaching the spaces and "third places" you connect with daily, weekly and monthly in a different way and with new perspective can offer new opportunities and enhance your social network.

The film tackles a range of questions that remain essential to our society today, including how racism influences policies related to immigration and refugees as well as how governments and people respond to the rise of authoritarian states that manipulate history and facts to consolidate power.
