A NOTE FROM SYLVIA September has arrived in Minnesota. Kids are back in school, summer activities are winding down, and apple picking season is in full swing. September also marks TPT’s anniversary. TPT first went on the air at 1:30 PM on September 16, 1957. Starting as KTCA, TPT has come a long way in its sixty-five years. I remember my time as a legal intern at TPT in the early 1990s when we had just moved into the Lowertown building. Now, it’s my honor to serve as TPT’s President and CEO and lead one of the Twin Cities’ premiere nonprofit organizations. In its sixty-five years, TPT has become a leading creator of national PBS productions. Facing Suicide , premiering this month, is a PBS documentary produced in-house by our incredibly dedicated TPT team. The film provides insight on the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, combining personal stories with science to understand why people attempt suicide and what can be done to prevent it. The Suicide Awareness Voices of Education (SAVE) complimented the documentary’s “message of recovery and hope.” Facing Suicide is a herculean effort. In addition to the film, TPT has partnered with ten PBS stations and leading suicide prevention organizations to create community-based initiatives across the country to amplify the impact of the film. TPT is also producing a Facing Suicide digital series premiering September 7 on youtube.com/PBS . This series is designed to raise awareness about suicide prevention among young adults. Mental health is such an important and timely issue in our communities, and TPT is proud to be a leader in addressing mental health issues through educational programming. I also want to acknowledge the start of Hispanic Heritage month, which begins September 15th.
