SIMPLER AND MORE SUPPORTIVE An Update to the Quality Payment Program
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently reported that they will be making alterations to the Quality Payment Program included in the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA). These changes are aimed at making life easier for small, independent practices without sacrificing the quality of Medicare nationwide. “We aim to improve Medicare by helping doctors and clinicians concentrate on caring for their patients, rather than filling out paperwork,” notes CMS Administrator Seema Verma. CMS has constantly sought feedback from doctors and clinicians to make sure the program meets the needs of practices, in turn improving the care that patients receive. The fact that CMS is so intent on listening to practices can only be a good sign. CMS hopes to encourage practices to participate in either Advanced Alternative Payment Models (APMs) or the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS). The amendments to the Quality Care Program will also remove some requirements for practices with the goal of including more small and rural practices in the program.
