angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, be not afraid to marry Mary, for her pregnancy is due to the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son and you will call Him Jesus for He will save His people from their sins.” All this occurred in fulfillment of what the Lord had said through the prophet, “ Observe! The virgin shall be pregnant and shall bear a son and they shall name him Immanuel, that is inter preted, God-With-Us.” When Joseph awoke from his sleep he carried out the angel’s command from the Lord. He married Mary but con served her virginity until she had given birth to a son whom he called Jesus. Many similar passages might be quoted to show the refreshingly new and yet conservative nature of this ex cellent translation. -Moreover, there are many places where the translator de parts from the traditional interpreta tion in an attempt to come closer to the original words of the Greek text. O NE of the most interesting of the recent translations of, the New Testament is The Berkeley Version of The New Testament with Footnotes by Gerrit Verkuyl. It is thoroughly con servative, and worthy of consideration by all who are interested in the inter pretation of Scripture. This version is thoroughly modern, and free from the archaisms so characteristic of the Au thorized Version, and the style is so per spicuous that it throws a flood of light upon passages that are nbscure in older translations. It becomes more interesting upon frequent use. It is a very handy lit tle volume, nicely arranged and printed in clear dark type. I think that the famous thirteenth chapter of First Corinthians is as typi cal as any of the language and original ity of the translator: Even though I speak in every human and angelic language and do not have love, I am as noisy brass or a loud- sounding cymbal. And although 1 have prophetic gift and see through every se cret and through all that may be known, and have sufficient faith for the removal of mountains, but I have no love, I am useless. And though I give all my belong ings for nourishment (to the needy) and surrender my body to be burned, but I have no love, I am not in the least bene fited. Love endures long and is kind; love is not jealous; love is not out for dis play; it is not conceited or unmannerly; it is neither self-seeking nor irritable, nor does it take account of a suffered wrong. It takes no pleasure in injustice, but it sides happily with truth. It cov ers up everything, has unquenchable faith, hopes under all circumstances, en dures without limit. Love never fades out. As for/prophesy ings, they shall be rendered useless; as for tongues, they shall cease; as for knowledge, it shall lose its meaning. For our knowledge is fragmentary and so is our prophesying. But when the total en sues then the fragmentary becomes anti quated. When I was a child I talked as a child; I entertained child interests; I reasoned like a child; but on becoming a man I am through with childish ways. So we now see only a dark outline in a mirror; but then it will be face to face. Now we know partly, but then we shall understand as completely as we are un derstood. There remain, then, faith, hope, love; these three; but the greatest of these is love. Another portion of the New Testa ment which is always interesting to look

up in a new translation is the familiar fourteenth chapter of John. Here is how the Berkeley Version has rendered it: Let not your hearts be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many homes. If this were not so, would I have told you that I was going to prepare a place for you? And when I have gone and have pre pared a place for you, I will come again and take you .along to Myself so that where I am, you also will be. And where I am going, you know the way. ! , Joseph T. Flacks, Hebrew Chris- j j tian, deserted and disowned by his | : family upon his conversion to ] j Christianity, left the following j J message on a postal card addressed j J to a beloved friend, to be mailed at j ! his death: M O V E D O U T j Triumphant through His grace! } j This is to announce that I have ! j moved out of the old mud house, j j and arrived m glory instantly in j ! charge of the Angelic Escort. “ Ab- j j sent from the body . . . at home S I with the Lord.” In His “presence j j fulness of joy . . . pleasures for j S evermore.” Will look for you on } j the way up, at the redemption of j { the body. I— ------------------------------------ i Thomas remarked to Him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going; (and) how do we know the way?” To which Jesus replied, I am the Way and the Truth and the Life; no one comes to the Father except through Me. Had you rec ognized Me, you would have known My Father as well. From now on you do know Him; yes, you have looked at Him. Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father and it is enough for us.” Jesus replied, How long have I been with you without your recognizing Me, Philip! He who has looked on Me, has looked on the Father. What do you mean by saying, “Show us the Father” ? The first chapter of the Gospel of Matthew, where the birth and the gen eration of Jesus Christ are described is translated thus: The birth of Jesus Christ came about this way: When His mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, before they were married, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. But as Joseph, her fiancé, was fairminded and did not want to disgrace her publicly, he planned to break with her just between them. But while he was considering this, an
