Dear Fellow Cattle Producers, Another year has flown by, and our favorite time of year is upon us. Every day of the year, we are in some fashion, preparing for this day, sale day! We couldn’t be any happier with the set of cattle we are offering for your appraisal this year, between the bulls and females, there is literally something for everyone. Each and every one of these animals brings value to the offering in some dynamic, and that’s what makes this group of cattle so special. Several years ago, we realized that we needed to adjust the focus of our program. While we will always concentrate on cattle that are pleasing to look at, we knew we had to make our cattle better genetically, improve what can’t be seen with the naked eye. As we all know, nothing happens fast in beef production, but we feel we have reached a point where these cattle offer true balance in terms of phenotype and genotype, calving ease, growth, maternal, and carcass traits. We will continue to push the envelope to encompass as many positive traits as we can in our herd, and we really love the upward trajectory of our cow base. We raise these cattle like any other commercial operation here in southern Iowa. We expect our cows to graze fescue pastures 8 months out the year and then turn them out in stockpiled grass for as long as the weather permits. When we start feeding them in the winter, the majority of their diet is good quality grass hay and depending on the year, they may get some sort of silage leading up to breeding. We’re firm believers in high quality mineral and vaccination programs and feel they are crucial to not only herd health, but performance and profitability in our operation. We develop these bulls on extremely high roughage diets. We encourage you to see what they eat while you are here. We develop them in pastures instead of smaller lots to ensure lots of exercise and condition them to the rigors of real-world breeding conditions. Rather than trying to maximize individual weights and performance, our focus during bull development is longevity, and doing what’s best to maximize the useful life of the animal. Our goal is that after the sale, the bulls continue to grow and mature the right way and when they show up at your operations, you are pleasantly surprised by the progression your purchase has made. You will notice our fall bull weights are a little less than normal, which we did by design. We slowed them up this year as they aren’t expected to work until they are 18+ months of age and we think this will be beneficial long term. These cattle all have genomically enhanced EPDs and we have reported all their data with the utmost integrity. We encourage you to have faith in the EPDs we publish in this catalog and there is no better way to compare genetic potential between these bulls than that data. Birth weights, weaning weights, and yearling weight calculations have all been figured into that data already, so buy with confidence! We are honored to have your consideration to be your seed stock source. We aim to make your experience as positive as we can, and we are confident that these cattle will accomplish what they are bred to do. We hope you can make it to the sale and better yet, any time before the sale to evaluate the offering. Please feel free to reach out to any of us with any questions you may have.
