Tasmanian Hospitality Review - August/September 2022

Clubs Tasmania

Farewell

• Implementing a stand-alone conference for the community club sector • Working alongside the sector and with government to address some of the issues and brainstorm solutions Free Sports Taping workshop for the grassroots club sector Clubs Tasmania is visible in the community and committed to representing the interests of the community club sector. One of the issues that continually arose at our regional forums and events across the state in 2021 was the cost of tape, the workload on volunteers in sourcing tape and the cost of first aid training for clubs.

With a new Government funding agreement commencing in July through to June 2025 and after four years in the role as Project Manager for Clubs Tasmania, it is the right time for me to move on to the next stage of my working life and the right time to pass the baton on. We are pleased to announce that Tom Darke will commence as program manager for Clubs Tasmania on September 5. Tom brings a vast array of sports and coaching experience along with lots of lived hospitality management experience to the role. I have been humbled and overwhelmed by the support from volunteers, State Sporting Organisations, participants, clubs, government and the broader sector in embracing the Clubs Tasmania program. I must also acknowledge the trust CEO Steve Old placed in me to work with the broader THA team and embrace the community club sector, under the THA umbrella. I am grateful for the opportunity and my time in the role has helped me continue to grow as a person and dedicate a period of my working life to one of my core values, ‘making the world a better place’.

Given one of our key platforms is ‘thinking differently’ we reached out to the team at Beiersdorf, who own Elastoplast, to see if they would be willing to set up an online shop for Tasmanian clubs so they could save money and reduce the workload on volunteers as well as provide some product for grassroots taping workshops across the state. Beiersdorf have supported us with $25,000 worth of product and equipment for our workshops and we have set up an online shop, where clubs can save 20 per cent on tape and medical supplies. Thanks to funding from the Tasmanian Government, we have a partnership with Back In Motion and Physio Tas, who supply qualified physios for each session and have developed online resources, that can be accessed via our website. Thank you to the volunteers who have attended sessions in Sorell, Turners Beach, Burnie, North Hobart, New Town and Snug. We have sessions scheduled in Launceston, Ulverstone, St Helens and Glenorchy later in the year and to register and find out more about our series of workshops, please call 1300 125 827.

Reflecting on four years in the role, moments that I am grateful and proud of include: • Establishing a trusted voice for the community club sector • Keeping the community club sector informed and supporting volunteers, who are the backbone of the sector • Lobbying for a voucher scheme in 2017 to assist families with the associated costs of sport, resulting in a participation increase of 14,000 • Seeing increased investment in the sport and recreation sector (more than $25 million in Levelling and Improving the Playing the Field and Covid grants tranche through Sport & Recreation)
