HOME (Cont. from page 25) celled law. I f the home is to sur vive and be the instrument of in struction and place of refuge for the members of the family, re member that God has a stated order that can be violated only with sorrow. This order is in descending scale, God at the top, Christ next, the man just below Christ, and finally the woman (cf. I Cor. 11:3). “But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head o f the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.” The American scene would no doubt be different today if this order had not been changed by human will in opposition to the divine decree. Neither the mother nor the child is to be the domineering figure. Man is to be the head of the family, and he is to be sub ject to Christ in it. Keeping the order straight, the Christian parent comes to the business of training the children. There are, among others, two verses that need emphasis. First, (P roverbs 22:6, ASV, 1901): “ Train up a child in the way he should go and even when he is old he will not depart from it.” Notice the added word even. In other words, if the child is trained properly and carefully, he will re main stable in the future as well as in the present. Precious prom ise from the profitable Word! The second verse is II Timothy 3:14 in which Paul tells Timothy that he is “ to continue in the things which he has learned.” This tells the Christian parent implicitly that the habits formed, ideas instilled, indulgences per mitted are to be such as to com mend continuation. What the par ent allows and teaches his child to do in his formative years must not be something that would need to be reversed at a later time in life. The momentum of the action will impede change. If a child is to be a truthful man, he must be taught to tell the truth. He needs not to be taught to lie; that is inborn. He must be taught by pre-

STRANGERS AND PILGRI

Rev. Richard DeHaan Teacher Radio Bible Class T h e r e is a n interesting story told about Chopin, the famous Polish composer. When he left Warsaw at the age of twenty to display his genius in the music capital of Europe, he was tormented by the conviction that he would never see his native land again. Therefore, he filled a small silver cup with Polish soil, and, wherever he traveled, kept the precious chalice near him. Twenty years later he died in Paris of tuberculosis. As his coffin was being lowered into the earth, his friends, who had remembered his prized possession, thoughtfully scat' tered its contents over his grave! Although he had traveled extensively, they knew his heart was still in Poland! Christians are in the world, but they are not of it! Their true af fections are centered on a Better Country. As “ pilgrims,” journeying steadily upward to the “ celestial fa therland,” they must ever be “ stran gers” to earth’s sins and follies, for

their true citizenship lies Above (Eph. 2:19 )! From the moment that Christ comes to dwell within, they have a bit of “ Heaven in their heart” ! Even as Chopin constantly had this small silver chalice with him — filled with a portion of his native land — so we too have within us the Holy Spirit, “ which is the earnest of our inheri tance” (Eph. 1:14). Let us often meditate then on the admonitions found in Colossians 3:1-4 and I John 2:15-17, lest we fall into the snare of setting our affections on things below! A t sunset, due to the inexorable flight of the moments, we shall find ourselves one step nearer eternity! I wonder, will it also find us spiritually on a higher plane than before — a day’s march “ nearer home” ?

THOT: A true saint eveiy day takes a turn in Heaven: his thoughts and desires are like birds flying up to Paradise!
