The genius of founder Arthur Shaw was to identify the waste material extracted from the colliery at Darwen, as fireclay. In 1897 he established Shaws of Darwen to make use of it. Today, at the same factory in Northern England, Shaws’ own Heavy Duty Fireclay is fired hotter and longer to produce kitchen and bathroom sinks with an incredibly durable finish.
