A JOKE, A QUOTE AND A TIP

The Joke… What’s the difference between a golfer and a fisherman? - When a golfer tells a lie he doesn’t have to bring anything home to prove it. The Quote… “The more I practice, the luckier I get.” - Gary Player The Tip… Lots of golfers struggle to get out of greenside bunkers. I don’t mean they struggle getting onto the green or near the hole. I’m talking about simply getting OUT of the bunker and back onto grass.

If that’s you, here’s a tip to help change the way you maybe think about bunker shots that might just help the way you approach them. And that might make a difference in the outcome. It’s not about the ball. That’s it. That’s the tip. Short. Simple. Easy. It’s not about the ball. Getting out of a greenside bunker has nothing to do with the ball – at least not so far as how you should think or execute the shot. The golfer’s job here is to knock some sand out of the bunker – specifically the sand that’s located underneath and just around the ball. If the sand comes out, the ball comes out with it. Every time. Here’s an illustration to prove the point. Stand in the middle of a greenside bun- ker. Fill your hand with sand and put a ball on top of the sand that’s in your hand – but not so that the ball actually touches any part of your hand or arm. Now toss the sand. Where did the ball go? I’ll bet it went almost exactly where the sand went. If the sand landed back in the bunker, the ball landed in the bunker. If the sand landed on the slope just outside the bunker, the ball landed on the same slope. But if the sand landed well outside the bunker –
