Brain Injury Medicine & Rehabilitation Program
Advancing Human Ability ® Shirley Ryan AbilityLab is the leader in caring for brain injury patients with a wide range of functional impairment — from the most catastrophic to the less severe. Our clinicians see patients throughout the continuum of recovery — from consultation in the acute-care setting, inpatient rehabilitation therapy and outpatient options to follow-up care.
DAYREHAB CENTER ® Our DayRehab Centers ® are designed to care for patients who no longer require inpatient hospitalization, but still need intensive, coordinated rehabilitation. The goal is to help patients regain the highest level of function while living at home. OUTPATIENT Our physicians continue to follow patients after discharge in one of our outpatient clinics. Outpatient therapy is recommended for patients who have therapy needs, but do not require interdisciplinary rehabilitation. LIFETIME CARE We have five specialist physicians who are board certified in Brain Injury Medicine and who can provide long-term care for the duration of a patient’s life, if necessary.
PRE-ADMISSION SERVICES Our physicians may consult with care teams at other hospitals, collaboration that can provide valuable insight for determining prognosis and treatment. Our Admission Liaisons consult with patients and families while they are still in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or a long- term, acute-care hospital (LTACH), thereby
giving care teams a head start in determining appropriate care.
INPATIENT Our team of specialists evaluates and works with patients from pre-admission to discharge, an ongoing process that enables team members to monitor progress, adapt therapies and better anticipate the future and potential for recovery.

SPECIALTY PROGRAMS We offer a variety of highly specialized programs and services for brain injury patients. Amicous ® Program Our Assessment of Minimally Conscious State ® (Amicous ® ) Program — one of the largest in the country — assesses and manages patients with disorders of consciousness, a significantly under- treated group. Traditionally, hospitals and clinics take a passive-care approach to this complex condition, but Shirley Ryan AbilityLab is proactive — we focus on challenging the patient in order to help him or her restore as much function as possible. Concussion Clinic Our program provides unique interdisciplinary treatment for post- concussive symptoms that have not resolved within several weeks of initial diagnosis. Patients are evaluated by one of our brain-injury-certified physicians. Based on symptoms, patients may be referred to other concussion specialists on our team. Key to this process, we address symptoms ranging from chronic headache, dizziness, nausea and decreased concentration to more often overlooked signs, such as personality change or altered sleep patterns. Our experts help get patients back to work, school or other activities that are important to them. Patients may also be referred to other specialists, as needed. Spasticity Clinic Our specialized physicians and therapists help patients with pain and muscle tone related to spasticity. Through an interdisciplinary evaluation process, we consider all treatment options and integrate those that will maximize functional improvement.
Family Service Counseling Our counselor can meet with family members to discuss behavior and implications resulting from the patient’s injury. Individual and group sessions are available. “Hello” Group Led by the brain injury therapy manager and the nurse manager, a weekly discussion group is offered to answer questions and discuss expectations.
Vision Clinic We offer brain injury patients with visual deficits the opportunity to be evaluated by a neuro-optometrist. Occupational therapists (OTs) with special training in vision impairment are present during consultations and collaborate with the neuro-optometrist in establishing a plan of care and in identifying appropriate treatments. After consultation, these OTs work with the patient, family and other team members to follow up on the neuro-optometrist’s recommendations.

The Shirley Ryan AbilityLab is not just a new research hospital. It’s a new kind of research hospital, one that is revolutionizing the future of rehabilitation and creating a new category of medicine. It is designed explicitly for the practice of “translational medicine” — a new model for medical care in which research is applied directly (“translated”) during patient care.
APHASIA STUDIES Our aphasia experts are investigating novel ways to treat aphasia through technological innovation, clinical research studies and unique therapeutic treatments. One study seeks to understand more fully how different cues, task difficulty and practice conditions affect script learning in chronic aphasia. NEURALPLASTICITY LAB The prefrontal cortex plays a fundamental role in human executive function and social cognition. Our research in this area spans a wide range of abilities, including decision- making, reward-processing, reasoning, action-planning, response inhibition, metacognition, social judgment and pro-social/empathic behavior. CHRONIC PAIN Using state-of-the-art brain imaging technology, our experts are able to formulate biological models for studying chronic pain — its relationship to function and to related psychological disorders, as well as its responsiveness to various types of treatment.
We have the largest rehabilitation-focused research program in the country, having attracted millions of dollars in funding. At present, we have more than 350 clinical studies under way — many of which tie directly to our traumatic brain injury (TBI) program. Our experts examine the delicate art of communication and thinking, examining neuropathways and the plasticity of the brain.
NON-INVASIVE BRAIN STIMULATION A brain stimulator equipped with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) capabilities tests whether brain stimulation can reduce inappropriate nerve impulses to the brain following a stroke. Paired with occupational therapy, this technique may ultimately improve hand and arm movements and strength.

PATIENT & FAMILY HOUSING Our Patient and Family Housing Program provides affordable housing options close to our flagship hospital in downtown Chicago for patients and families in need of accommodations. Please note, all housing is subject to availability. Shirley Ryan AbilityLab is proud to partner with The Hyatt Centric Chicago Magnificent Mile to offer free housing to our patients who are not enrolled in a government healthcare program and their families traveling from greater than 60 miles.
PSYCHOLOGY We are here to support both patient and family as feelings and thoughts emerge during the journey to recovery. Our trained professionals help with any psychological, emotional and/or social concerns or challenges.
LIFE CENTER An award-winning resource, the Henry B. Betts LIFE Center, offers educational materials, peer counseling and support for those whose day-to-day lives have changed due to the injury of a loved one. LIFE stands for Learning, Innovation, Family and Empowerment.
Brett’s Story: Back to College After a Traumatic Brain Injury
through our research to yield better, faster recoveries for patients. Brett was discharged 2.5 months later, and walked out the front door on his own. He returned to college at Indiana University where he switched his major to therapeutic recreation.
What was to have been a fun family vacation suddenly turned tragic. Brett went off a ski jump, landing on his head and shoulder, sustaining a severe traumatic brain injury and breaking his clavicle. His brain injury affected his memory, comprehension, speaking, mobility and ability to perform activities of daily living. As a result, Brett was admitted to the Amicous ® Program, which is designed to assess and rehabilitate brain-injured patients who are in a minimally conscious state. Within a few weeks, Brett could communicate by moving his eyes. A month later, he whispered his first
words, and by the end of that month, he was speaking extensively. By his third month, he was considered “fully conscious.” Brett relearned to sit, walk and balance during his physical therapy sessions, which focused on high-intensity, task- specific training, an approach proven

MEET OUR MEDICAL LEADER Sangeeta Driver, MD, MPH
Dr. Driver is the Section Chief of Brain Injury Medicine & Rehabilitation at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. She is double board-certified in Brain Injury Medicine, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Driver has previously served as a Congressional Health Fellow on Capitol Hill, Regional Co-director for Doctors for America, a member of the American Medical Association Council on Legislation, and a member of Congressman Danny K. Davis’ Health Care Advisory Task Force. In addition to her work at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, she is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
