Costumes, Candy, and Creepy Movies Ahead! A Dad’s Halloween Game Plan

THE KONECKY JOURNAL OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2025

As I’ve written in the past, Halloween is not only my favorite holiday, it’s the favorite of my entire family. To quote a character from the original

As I write this, no decisions have yet been made on our costumes this year. Jade will probably choose a look that reflects her current favorite character. And I will probably lean toward a throwback look. My lifelong love of Halloween was instilled, in part, by my mom. Since I was a kid, I have loved putting together elaborate costumes. My mom skipped the store-bought outfits. Instead, we trekked to the fabric store to get materials and made ours from scratch. One year, she made me a full vampire costume, with a spooky-looking double-breasted vest and a double- sided cape. The next year, she helped me convert the cape into a Jedi cloak. When I was about 10 years old, I was really into “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” Instead of getting a Freddy Krueger mask like all the other kids, I got my hands on some special effects makeup. For the knife hands, I found an old gardening glove and attached Popsicle sticks and tin foil. When my high school put on a Halloween costume contest, I bought some Hollywood special-effects makeup, then applied some fake skin to my face and built it up around my eye. In the crowning touch, I plastered on a fake eyeball to look as if my eye was hanging out of my skull. It may have been a little graphic — but I did win the contest! As you can see, my family and I take Halloween very seriously! Fall foods, costumes, and trick-or- treating are things we have always enjoyed. Now that Jade is 10, we will still go out with her around the neighborhood, but hang back with the other parents and let her venture farther on her own. I know that no matter what costume she decides on, we’re going to have a lot of fun as a family.

“Halloween” movie, it’s a time when “everyone’s entitled to one good scare.”

Halloween for us is a multisensory experience.

Around Labor Day, we start to notice all of our favorite fall foods, like pumpkin doughnuts. Another tradition is to watch as many scary movies as possible.

My wife and I have always loved getting dressed up for Halloween. And now that we celebrate every year with our

daughter Jade, we start around Labor Day to shop for costumes at our favorite costume store. I’m not talking about some Halloween pop-up outlet. No off- the-shelf, mass-market lookalikes for us! We go to an established, year-round costume store that serves theater people and trick-or-treaters alike. We walk a fine line here in Florida in preparing for the weather. It might be in the 90s on trick-or- treat night, or it might be in the 70s. On Jade’s first Halloween years ago, the temperature sank to 65. We have to get a costume that isn’t so heavy that we’ll sweat if it’s warm, but we also have to be prepared in case it turns cool. With Jade, every new Halloween provides a snapshot-in-time of what she is really into at that moment. When she was 2, she was Sheriff Callie from a Disney Jr. show. In preschool, she was Jessie from “Toy Story.” (I got into the spirit by donning a cowboy hat and vest, as a thrown-together version of Woody.) As Jade grew a little older, she became Elsa from “Frozen.” Last year, she was Red, the daughter of the Queen of Hearts from “Descendants.”

Fall foods, costumes, and trick-or-treating are things we have always enjoyed.”

Think Your Headphones Are Loud?

THESE SOUNDS PUT THAT TO SHAME

Most of us think we’ve experienced “loud”: a front row seat at a rock concert, a jetliner taking off, or a fire alarm blaring in a small room. But those everyday rumbles don’t come close to the Earth’s loudest sounds that have shattered records, and in some cases, been heard across entire oceans. Krakatoa’s Earth-Shattering Blast In 1883, the volcanic island of Krakatoa in Indonesia exploded in a detonation so violent that it obliterated most of the island and generated tsunamis that killed more than 36,000 people. People heard the sound from over 3,000 miles away, as far as Mauritius and Australia. At an estimated 310 decibels (dB), Krakatoa’s roar remains the loudest sound human ears and instruments have ever recorded. To put that in perspective, even 150 dB can rupture eardrums. Krakatoa more than doubled that. Tsar Bomba: The Loudest Human-Made Explosion Tsar Bomba was almost as intense as Krakatoa, but humans created this one. Detonated by the Soviet Union in 1961, this hydrogen bomb released the energy of 50 megatons of TNT. The blast was measured around 224 dB, enough to flatten buildings hundreds of miles away and break windows across Northern Europe. The mushroom cloud rose to over 40 miles high. The Mysterious Oceanic ‘Bloop’ In 1997, underwater microphones in the South Pacific picked up an ultra-low-frequency sound dubbed the “Bloop.” It was so loud it could be detected over 3,000 miles away. At first, the unexplained noise caused people to speculate about unknown sea monsters. But scientists later attributed it to an icequake, or giant icebergs cracking and shifting in the ocean. Even so, its eerie origin and intensity are fascinating. Cosmic Vibrations Beyond Earth Although sound can’t travel in space’s vacuum, cosmic events still generate wave-like disturbances. In 2003, scientists discovered a black hole in the Perseus galaxy cluster that was emitting pressure waves in space gas — the waves translated into an incredibly deep B-flat, 57 octaves below middle C. If we could “hear” it, it would be an impossibly deep, booming rumble across millions of light-years.

Magic Kingdom Meltdown

“I would give 10 stars or more to Matthew Konecky and his team if I could. After a car accident, I was overwhelmed and unsure of what to do next … Matthew made me feel supported and informed every step of the way. He handled all the legal and financial details with insurance companies and hospitals so I could focus on recovering from my injuries. Matthew Konecky and his team, especially Maria Avila, were always professional and responsive and genuinely cared about my case. In the end, he helped me secure a fair settlement that covered my medical expenses and more. If you’ve been in an accident and need someone you can trust to fight for you, I absolutely recommend Matthew Konecky … and his team. I’m so grateful for all their help!” A MESSAGE FROM THE FAITHFUL

A Scuffle at Cinderella’s Castle — And Where to Learn More

In case you missed it, alleged criminal activity at Walt Disney World has been making strange headlines.

With this incident, as with so many of the legal controversies going viral these days, there is much more involved than meets the eye. To keep my clients, readers, and followers in the know about how the law actually works in South Florida, I’m expanding my presence on social media. How does Florida’s new “halo law” raise your risk of being arrested? What do you say to police if you are pulled over for an alleged DUI? Did Gov. DeSantis commit legal malpractice when he said it’s OK to drive through a mob to protect your safety? And what

A Spanish tourist was arrested at a Disney parade recently for allegedly grabbing a teen’s arm and pushing her out of the way to get a better view of the parade. The teen sustained an abrasion and a bruise, and the tourist was unharmed. Police deputies reportedly separated the two females, but no video evidence was available.

It’s time for a reality check: Anyone who has visited Main Street at Disney knows three things for sure:

It’s hot.

It’s crowded.

The legal reality is that a battery conviction requires evidence of intent. The prosecution has to prove that the alleged batterer willfully tried to hurt the victim — not just that someone got bumped. Making contact is not a crime. You could shuffle through a packed crowd with your elbows out like the Buccaneers’ Lavonte David, and that still wouldn’t necessarily be a crime.

HAUNTED HORIZONS A HALLOWEEN TRAVEL TRIO

Bourbon Bone-Chillers If you want to add Southern charm to your Halloween chills, a trip to New Orleans, Louisiana, is in order. From above-ground cemeteries and ghost tours to ghoulishly adorned shops in the French Quarter (including the must-visit Marie Laveau’s House of Voodoo on Bourbon Street) and an annual Halloween parade, The Big Easy will surely put you in touch with your spooky side. Detour to Dracula’s Den From the classic 1922 film “Nosferatu” to the Francis Ford Coppola-directed cinematic masterpiece “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” that premiered 70 years later, our cultural interest in vampires has spanned decades — and, in the case of Transylvania, Romania, centuries . Anyone with a passport and a desire to catch a glimpse at the real-world aesthetic that helped define the image of Dracula and other distinctive undead characters should visit Bran Castle, an amazing monument of Gothic architecture and the long-rumored residence of infamous 15th century-era prince and mass murderer Vlad the Impaler — widely believed to be the real-life inspiration behind the Dracula character. While many of the legends associated with Transylvania may be more fiction than fact, the locale remains the go-to spot for anyone with an affinity for apparitions.

If your idea of fun seasonal travel is touring a spooky castle in October rather than hitting a sandy beach in July, here are three vacation ideas that will take your Halloween fun to spine-tingling new heights this year! Where Witches Wander When it comes to Halloween-themed adventures, no other place on the East Coast offers more macabre merriment than Salem, Massachusetts. Known for its infamous witch trials of the late 1690s, the city transforms its dark past into a destination that balances historical facts with tongue-in-cheek kitsch. The weeks leading up to Oct. 31 are filled with more magic shows, tours, special events, and Halloween-themed shopping opportunities than you can shake a broom at. If you decide to partake in the area’s devilish fun this year, visit the Salem Witch Board Museum — which boasts the world’s most extensive Ouija board collection — and the Salem Witch Museum.
