OUTPATIENT REHABILITATION Available at locations throughout Chicagoland Our pediatric outpatient programs provide physician and therapy services for children of all ages. If your child is referred by another physician, our therapists will collaborate with him or her, set goals and ensure that your child has the opportunity to achieve the best possible outcome.

INPATIENT REHABILITATION During an inpatient stay, our integrated team of pediatric rehabilitation physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists will develop a customized care plan designed to help meet your child's unique rehabilitation goals. Our team also includes psychologists, social workers, art and music therapists, therapy dogs, and a Child Life specialist to assist with social and emotional needs. DAYREHAB CENTER ® Available at locations throughout Chicagoland Our DayRehab Centers set the standard for patients who no longer require hospitalization, but still need intensive, interdisciplinary rehabilitation care. The goal is to help patients regain the highest level of function while living at home. The pediatric team at our DayRehab Centers includes physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists and psychologists. This team also works to facilitate a successful return to school for each child, making recommendations, accommodations and modifications when necessary.

SPINA BIFIDA We coordinate care for children and teenagers with spina bifida who have complex conditions of the spine, spinal cord, brain, bowel and bladder. Our services and resources are designed to help individuals with spina bifida as they transition from pediatric care to adult care. STROKE We lead the field in caring for the most patients following a stroke — whether impairment is less severe or catastrophic. Your child’s care is infused with the best practices in medicine and proven research applied to your child’s therapy in real time. We are at the forefront of new treatments and therapeutic interventions through millions in grant dollars for brain research. This means our patients are receiving the most state-of-the-art treatments available — anywhere. ORTHOPEDIC/SPORTS INJURIES We are the experts in evaluation and treatment of pediatric sports injuries — from overuse, in-season injuries to postoperative care. Following your child’s initial evaluation, we will create a customized care plan designed to work toward individual goals. Our team of physical therapists includes specialists from diverse backgrounds — including general orthopedics, the overhead athlete, performing arts, and contact and agility sports, among others. CONCUSSION We offer a collaborative, team-based approach to treating acute and chronic impairments related to concussion. Therapists have advanced training in treating vestibular, vision, attention, memory and executive functioning, with a focus on strategies for returning to learning environments. Our clinic is structured to provide immediate appointment availability to optimize speed of recovery. SPINAL CORD INJURIES As a federally designated center for the treatment of traumatic and nontraumatic spinal cord injuries, we offer one of the only national programs that can treat patients at all levels of injury. Our integrated therapeutic approach is customized for each patient, offering the best opportunity to regain skills and return to living independently. We also offer a Second Look Program for people who have sustained a spinal cord injury, which includes a comprehensive medical evaluation and care management update. CANCER We treat neurological, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and other impairments caused by cancer itself or by aggressive treatments. Our specialized care and innovative treatment offer an integrated approach for children and adolescents with a diagnosis of cancer.

With tools like our Spasticity Clinic and Computerized Motion Analysis, our integrated team offers ongoing care that develops and progresses with your child. As your child grows, we can provide a smooth transition from pediatric care to coordinated medical care for adults. ACQUIRED AND TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY (TBI) We have the largest rehabilitation-focused research program in the country, with millions in funding and nearly 300 ongoing projects — many of which tie directly to our TBI program. This research, combined with more than 50 years of clinical experience,

Advanced Rehabilitation in Our Pediatric Lab

The lively Grainger Pediatric Lab is specifically designed for pediatric patients (inpatients and outpatients). In this Lab, children and teens work with doctors, researchers and therapists on advancing ability. The equipment and facilities in the Lab are scaled for both younger children and adolescents of all ages. Our lab is equipped with state-of-the-art devices, technology and equipment, including many inventions created by our scientists. In this Lab, robotics for upper- and lower-extremity motor impairment, innovative treadmills and devices for walking, “intelligent” muscle stretchers, 3D gait analysis, as well as virtual reality setups, are employed to help our young patients achieve their best outcomes. Family participation is essential to success, and parents and caregivers play an important role on our team. Family members provide vital, personal insights that help in developing an effective treatment plan and enable progress outside of therapy. In addition, we educate family members on all areas of care, including safety and success at home. ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY Our team of speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists have access to the most innovative augmentative communication technology to help children communicate with their families and friends.

INTELLIGENT STRETCHER The Intelligent Stretcher is a rehabilitation robot developed by researchers at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab and Marquette University. This device allows both passive and gradual active-assisted motion at the ankle/foot. Because muscles in children with cerebral palsy (CP) are weaker, abnormal in size and volume, and lack normal range of motion, this tool was developed to improve patient participation and muscle control. Since it was introduced, our clinicians have seen demonstrated improvements in muscle strength, active range of motion and control of the ankle/foot for improved walking.

ADOLESCENT PAIN & POSTURAL ORTHOSTATIC TACHYCARDIA SYNDROME (POTS) PROGRAM We help patients and their families better understand and manage chronic pain successfully. Our goal is to enable adolescents to get back to activities they enjoy, such as school and sports. For people with autonomic nervous system problems, our POTS program offers treatment focusing on exercise and lifestyle changes that can decrease symptoms and increase their quality of life.

VENTILATOR WEANING (VENT LIBERATION)

Our Vent-weaning Program (what we call vent liberation) is a specialty in itself. These specialists have decades of experience in helping patients breathe independently (completely, or in longer intervals). Our unique approach has proven highly successful. AMPUTATION & LIMB DEFICIENCY We meet your child’s unique needs by integrating medical expertise, technology and engineering (prosthetics, orthotics, bionics, robotic devices) with a range of therapies. EFFECTIVENESS OF ROBOTIC GAIT TRAINING FOR CHILDREN WITH CP Lokomat ® training is a robot-assisted walking therapy to help a child whose ability to walk has been impaired by stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury or neurological and orthopedic conditions. A computer controls the pace of walking and measures the body’s response to the movement. We believe that by controlling the repetitive walking pattern, we can help the brain and spinal cord work together to reroute signals that were interrupted by injury or illness. In addition to training the brain and spinal cord, robot-assisted walking therapy may help strengthen muscles and improve circulation. The weight-bearing nature of the exercise may also help strengthen bones at risk for osteoporosis due to lack of use. We are currently conducting a clinical trial to study the effectiveness of the Lokomat as a treatment. PURSUING A NON-SURGICAL CURE TO MUSCLE CONTRACTURE IN CHILDREN WITH CP CP is the most common motor-control disorder resulting from an injury to the developing brain of a child. Our goal is to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal abnormalities as early as possible. Children with CP often experience muscle contractures, which deform their joints, limit function and may be painful. Current treatments require arduous splinting and

We are studying the biology of muscle stem cells from children with CP. We have discovered that their muscles do not respond to common treatments because their stem cells are biologically unresponsive. Using a combination of drug screening and biology, we are developing a drug- based solution that activates muscle growth, relieving contractures. WALKING & CP We are analyzing patient gait before and after orthopedic interventions (such as tendon transfers and hip and knee surgeries). CLINICAL RESEARCH REGISTRY (CRR) The CRR is a collaborative effort between Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, Northwestern University Physical Therapy and Human Movement Sciences and the University of Chicago. The mission of the CRR is to promote and support CP research, directly connecting researchers with people who have CP. Researchers studying CP submit their Institutional Review Board-approved study proposals to the CRR. Once approved by the CRR team, appropriate candidates are notfied about the study. We believe that by working together, families and researchers can make a difference in the lives of people affected by CP.

Camps & Activities *

SPORTS FOR KIDS Our Tengelsen Family Foundation Sports for Kids program offers adaptive sports, social, arts, cultural and camp opportunities for kids ages 7 to 17 with a diagnosed primary loss or impairment of physical function. SUMMER CAMPS Each camp includes a schedule of fun activities with a specific area of focus. A physician referral/prescription is required to participate in these camps. Power Play: Constraint-induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) Camp Led by our pediatric occupational therapists, Power Play is a four-week program that focuses on improving upper-extremity function in children who have spastic hemiplegia or hemiparesis as a result of cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, stroke or other diagnoses.

This program utilizes the CIMT protocol, which calls for restraining the unaffected arm, thereby requiring use of the affected arm for all functional activities. Camp activities include games, art projects, outings, sensory play activities, bimanual activities and self-care. Stride Through Summer: Gait Camp Led by our pediatric physical therapists, Stride Through Summer is a four-week program for children focused on high- intensity exercise and activities to improve gait, balance, strength and endurance. Language Explorers: Speech Camp Language Explorers is an intensive therapy group that focuses on improving receptive and expressive language skills through peer interaction and group participation. Group activities to foster language skills include reading books together, singing songs and doing language-based crafts.

MEET OUR PHYSICIAN LEADER Gadi Revivo, DO

Dr. Revivo is the Section Chief for the Pediatric Innovation Center at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. He is board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) and Pediatric PM&R. Additionally, he holds an academic appointment as Associate Professor in the Department of PM&R at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. As a practicing pediatric physiatrist for 20 years, Dr. Revivo treats children and young adults across the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab continuum of care — including inpatient, DayRehab (day rehabilitation) and outpatient services. He directs an interdisciplinary pediatric chronic pain management program in collaboration with child psychology and allied health professionals. Embracing a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to care, he works with a cross- functional team of therapists, nurses and pediatric researchers, to optimize patients’ functional capacity, with the goal of integrating patients back into their home, school and community environments. In both the United States and internationally, Dr. Revivo assesses and treats patients with complex movement disorders (e.g., cerebral palsy, genetic disorders, orthopedic conditions, and neurological injuries such as stroke, spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries). His goal is always to determine the level of rehabilitation care each patient needs in order to achieve the greatest level of function.
