Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Program

Our goal is to help you achieve your best outcome with cutting-edge treatments. As the world’s #1 referral choice for spinal cord injury, you benefit from our integration of medicine, research and technology.

Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Program

Advancing Human Ability ® Shirley Ryan AbilityLab is the global leader in physical medicine and rehabilitation for those with the most severe, complex conditions. Our goal: to help patients achieve better, faster outcomes. Each year, we treat more patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) than almost any other rehabilitation provider in the world. We lead the field in caring for those with a wide range of impairments — from the most catastrophic to the less severe. Our clinicians bring their skill and expertise to serve our patients across the continuum of care. In fact, we tout the most board-certified physicians specializing in SCI, as well as the most therapists certified in SCI sub-specialties, such as neurorehabilitation. We welcome patients from around the world in our downtown Chicago flagship hospital and in satellite locations throughout Chicagoland and the Midwest.

SEEKING A SECOND OPINION? Our Expert Eval ® Second Opinion program is for those with SCI who hope to make additional gains months (or even years) following inpatient rehabilitation.

OUTPATIENT REHABILITATION Available at more than 30 locations Our physicians continue to follow patients after they have been discharged to one of our outpatient clinics. Outpatient therapy is recommended if patients continue to benefit from therapy, but do not require continuous medical care.

INPATIENT REHABILITATION Our team of specialists evaluates and works with patients from pre-admission to discharge, monitoring progress, adapting therapies and optimizing recovery.

DAYREHAB CENTER ® Available at 5 locations Our renowned DayRehab Center ®

program is designed for patients who no longer require hospitalization, but still need intensive, coordinated rehabilitation care. The goal is to help patients regain the highest level of function — and to be fully supported by our team through the transition from the hospital back into the community.

Translational Medicine Shirley Ryan AbilityLab is not just a research hospital. It's a novel kind of research hospital, one that is revolutionizing the future of rehabilitation and creating a new category of medicine. It is designed explicitly for the practice of "translational medicine" — a model for medical care in which research is applied and directly "translated" during patient care.

Our goal is to maximize the potential for the best patient outcome — with the hope of speeding rehabilitation and recovery.

Research & Technology

TECHNOLOGY Our clinicians leverage next-generation technologies to advance patient recovery. Robot-assisted walking therapy with the Lokomat ® uses a robotic gait orthosis to support the patient as he or she walks on a body-weight-supported treadmill. A computer controls the pace of walking and measures the body’s movement. The prototype KineAssist ® , a walking and balance exercise system, is a motorized platform with a “smart brace” that

supports the patient’s trunk and pelvis while standing. Because it allows patients to lean or swing their legs without falling, it can help them learn to walk again. The Ekso GT ™ is a robotic exoskeleton used for gait training. The motors power the hip and knee joints, which assists patients in standing and walking on level surfaces. Motion is initiated though specific patient actions or through the use of an external controller.

Meet Lewis: Intrepid Patient Takes SCI Rehabilitation by Storm

Today, he lives independently, continues to participate in research and has plans to compete in wheelchair basketball, mountain biking and archery. Lewis wants to help others who are on similar journeys. “I would love to show people who have spinal cord injuries that there are always possibilities,” he said.

Lewis and his mom, Cynthia, were excited about Shirley Ryan AbilityLab’s integration of research and cutting-edge technology with physical rehabilitation. “I wanted Lewis to be part of a community with that kind of excitement and atmosphere of possibility,” said Cynthia. Within six months, Lewis made remarkable progress through Shirley Ryan AbilityLab’s entire continuum of care — including inpatient and DayRehab. He participated in hospital research and also fed his love of sports through enthusiastic participation in the therapeutic recreation and adaptive sports programs.

As a teenager in Kenya, Lewis enjoyed a life of sports and adventure. He was swept up in the national craze for motocross. Then, one day he missed a turn on his motorcycle, catapulted 20 feet into the air and landed on his back. He couldn’t feel his legs. “It was the scariest thing that has ever happened in my life,” he said. Lewis was rushed to a hospital in Nairobi, having sustained a complete spinal cord injury. He underwent a six-hour surgery and then began to plan his next level of care — a journey that would bring him 8,000 miles from home to Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in Chicago.
