Animals have a honed sense of danger, so when wildfire occurs, most animals sense it and can run away or stand in streams to avoid the hazard. Join Jayne Johnson as she discusses how wildlife responds to disasters and controlled burns here in Florida. Fires are a necessary part of life for some wildlife, stimulating new growth, fungi and mushrooms that produce spores, and some plants needs a fresh area to flourish. Jayne Johnson is a Wildlife Assistance Biologist for the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

‘ A Short History of the Planet Earth ’ by Professor Adrian Kerr Friday ~ April 8th 2:00 PM Large Card Room $10 per person

When we gaze into the sky at the moon and the visible planets we often wonder about the origin of our solar system, the galaxies and the universe itself. Science cannot confirm who created the universe; this has been left to religion to explain. However, we continue to remain curious as to how and when our unique planet Earth and our satellite, the moon, were formed. It has only been in our lifetime that science has been able to demonstrate that it all started with the ‘ Big Bang ’ 14 billion years ago, the timescale is truly mind stretching. We will follow the fascinating story of how the universal gas and dust clouds formed, how stars were born and died, how our sun collected the majority of the matter in our solar system, how the Earth became a molten ball and then cooled. We will discuss how a stray planet collided with Earth and the molten debris created then formed the moon. We conclude by discussing how our constantly changing planet produced water, life and oxygen and how on three separate occasions, life on earth almost became extinct allowing other creatures to rise and dominate our world. Please sign up with the Lifestyle team for this presentation. The money Professor Kerr raises from his talks goes to help the post - grad archaeology students in Luxor with expenses. Part of their work is copying the writings on the temples before the weather destroys them completely. Post - grad students get no grant assistance so this is much appreciated. Adrian spends much of his free time providing talks to communities around Fort Myers for this purpose. He ’ s a passionate historian and Egyptologist.
