Our Innovation Centers At Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, care is administered in our five innovation centers — BRAIN

The focus of The John and Kathy Schreiber Brain Innovation Center is to promote brain healing and recovery. Here, our team is expert in treating a variety of patient populations, including those with traumatic and non-traumatic brain injury, across the full spectrum of severity — from concussion and stroke to disorders of consciousness. The Renée Crown Center for Spinal Cord Innovation is equipped to support patients with all levels, types and severity of spinal cord injury (SCI), including patients with complete paralysis and those who require mechanical ventilation. The primary goals for patients in this center include the emergence of meaningful motor function, sensation, coordination and endurance; resolution of respiratory and vascular instability; and overall continued medical recovery from the injury or disease. SPINAL CORD The Nerve, Muscle & Bone Innovation Center’s singular priority is treating patients with injuries and conditions affecting body movement — from amputations to neurological diseases. The immediate goals for most patients in this center include improvements in total body movement, complex motor and sensory activities, balance, coordination and higher-level activities of daily living (e.g., cooking, cleaning, gardening, sports and other recreational activities). Our Pediatric Innovation Center features lively, child-centered themes to create a stimulating — and uplifting — atmosphere for young patients and their families. Our goal is to provide specialty rehabilitation care for children from infancy through adolescence, including care for children with traumatic injuries, congenital and developmental disorders, and those surviving cancer. NERVE, MUSCLE & BONE PEDIATRIC CANCER The Cancer Rehabilitation Innovation Center leverages the world-class care and expertise provided in all of the other innovation centers — brain; spinal cord; nerve, muscle & bone; and pediatric. We are the only rehabilitation hospital in the region — and one of only a handful of institutions across the country — to offer a comprehensive, integrated approach to rehabilitation for adults and children fighting cancer.

state-of-the-art hospital facilities offering medical and nursing care and diagnostic support. Patient rooms throughout the innovation centers are fitted with the latest smart-room, mobility and therapeutic devices and equipment.

Kyle’s Story: Back to an Active Lifestyle When Kyle was 25, he was in a car accident that caused a severe brain injury. The injury affected his speech, mobility, memory and activities of daily living. His family was told this would not be something he’d be able to come back from.

He was flown from his home in St. Louis to begin rehabilitation

“Take everything you do in rehabilitation very

at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. Kyle spent three to four hours every day in therapy, working with his physical therapist, occupational therapist and speech- language pathologist.

seriously and give it your best shot. Take advantage of the moment!” — Kyle

“During the time that he was here, we hit a lot of milestones — from not being able to communicate to being able to speak his first words,” said his mom, Kathy. When Kyle started his recovery, his therapists needed to position him upright. Eventually, he was able to take his first steps on his own. Kyle returned home to St. Louis a month later and continues to make strides each and every day.

OTHER PLACES TO EXPLORE HUB The HUB is an inviting room for you and your family to eat, play games or participate in group activities and social events. HUB spaces, which are located on every inpatient floor, can be transformed into a creative studio for art, crafts, music or a group movie night. Spaces are equipped with dining tables and chairs, reading nests, couches and wireless internet. Each HUB also includes a laundry room for patients and families. Vistas Vistas are peaceful nooks for you and your family members, located at the corners of each innovation center. Gardens Designed expressly for patients, our three expansive gardens encourage movement and progress — offering safe opportunities for strolls outside the hospital on foot, wheels or bionic limbs. The gardens provide a tranquil setting to reflect on the road to recovery.

Our Ability Labs Our five ability labs are therapeutic spaces uniquely designed for treating patients using our revolutionary, applied-research model. Each lab offers an inspiring environment in which our experts, equipped with the most advanced technology and cutting-edge research, implement your individualized recovery plan.

All ability labs have unique configurations based on a targeted function and the type of experimentation taking place therein. In these hubs for recovery, our dynamic teams push current thinking, test new processes, apply novel solutions and develop devices that will help you to gain more function, achieve better outcomes and enjoy greater independence and ability in your life.

 THINK + SPEAK LAB

The Robert R. McCormick Foundation Think + Speak Lab is dedicated to helping patients recover the ability to think, reason, perceive, swallow, eat, talk, interact with others and make decisions key for returning to their lives. In this lab, combined therapeutic care and scientific application help patients recover the building blocks of ability. LEGS + WALKING LAB The Margaret & Mark Stephan Legs + Walking Lab is designed for those with diagnoses affecting lower-body function due to brain or spinal cord injury and diseases of the nerves, muscles and bones. Clinicians and scientists focus on advancing trunk, pelvic and leg function, movement, and balance. ARMS + HANDS LAB The Harris Family Foundation Arms + Hands Lab is a robust environment designed for patients working on recovering and strengthening complex upper-body skills — turning a key, picking up a pen, reaching for a glass, putting on a sweater — all the many things we do with our hands, arms and fingers.

 STRENGTH + ENDURANCE LAB

The Nancy W. Knowles Strength + Endurance Lab is designed for patients working on building stamina and resilience. Therapy is targeted to improve complex motor and endurance activities, coordination and higher-level activities of daily living (e.g., cooking, dressing, gardening and sports). PEDIATRIC LAB In the Grainger Pediatric Lab, therapy is often cleverly disguised as play. For example, exercises for stretching, strengthening and developing coordination might take place on a jungle gym. A device to build strength and endurance might feel like riding a bike. Digital games designed to improve thinking and speaking might be adapted for kids of various ages, from toddlers to teens.

OTHER SPACES TO EXPLORE Activities of Daily Living Studios

From the moment you arrive at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, our team works to prepare you for the next step in your journey. Our four unique activities of daily living (ADL) studios throughout the hospital look and function like a home, equipped with a kitchen, living room, bathroom and laundry room. Our ADL studios are utilized in occupational and physical therapy to help you regain and refine daily living skills such as cooking, opening cabinets and drawers, bathing, doing laundry, etc. Each studio offers a slightly different floor plan to mirror a variety of home settings. Stairways Located in three of our ability labs, these therapeutic stairways serve as vertical pathways between floors — a powerful tool for improving human movement, strength and function. They are equipped with an antigravity lift track, which supports a patient’s weight, as needed, for safety.

Specialized Clinical Services

These specialized services are offered to you based on your individual care plan and goals.

AQUATIC CENTER Aquatic therapy speeds healing and improves outcomes. Increased buoyancy, resistance and hydrostatic pressure decrease pressure on joints, making it possible to “unweight” the patient. Warmth and motion lead to heightened muscle activity, which in turn improves circulation and lessens inflammation and pain. Our pool is equipped with a state-of-the art lift to transfer you safely into the water, which is maintained at an optimal therapeutic temperature.

ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY CENTER We are one of the few hospitals in the nation with an Assistive Technology Center and rehabilitation engineers onsite who are able to customize any patient device (e.g., to use head-/eye-controlled or voice-activated systems with specialty software). Our experts are equipped to set you up with specialized computers, communication devices or electronic aids to best suit your needs.

PROSTHETICS & ORTHOTICS We set the world standard in creating custom prosthetics and orthotics — leveraging both science and art. Our experts collaborate with patients’ physicians and therapy teams to provide the right prosthetic or orthotic device to meet individual ability goals. We provide everything from prefabricated orthoses (braces) to customized microprocessor lower-limb prostheses (smart artificial limbs). Our experts are available to provide continued maintenance and adjustments on your device.

Our Prosthetics & Orthotics Suite includes workspaces, tools, equipment, computers equipped with laser-guided digital cameras (to create 3-D models of limbs), a casting room and private fitting rooms. RADIOLOGY & IMAGING SUITE Many of our patients’ medical conditions require periodic assessments. In our Radiology & Imaging Suite, we offer radiology, MRI, CT scanning, fluoroscopy, bone-density imaging, ultrasound/ vascular studies, specimen processing and a research lab — all onsite so you don’t have to leave the building for the care you need. Getting test results faster also means faster assessment, faster response and better outcomes for you. WHEELCHAIR SEATING & POSITIONING CENTER Wheelchair comfort, position and functionality are vital for independence, productivity and quality of life. Additionally, a perfectly fitted mobility device promotes good posture, improves breathing and digestion, and helps to prevent complications, such as pressure sores and skin irritation. At our Wheelchair Seating & Positioning Center — one of the only custom wheelchair seating centers in Chicago — our technicians work with you to find a tailored solution, resolve any issues and keep you moving while continually assessing your needs and abilities.

Our experts quickly are adopting new approaches and evidence-based practices into their care to facilitate better, faster patient recoveries. You may have an opportunity to participate in research during your stay.

CENTER FOR BIONIC MEDICINE The Regenstein Foundation Center for Bionic Medicine is a leading research group within Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. Its goal is to improve the function and quality of life for individuals with amputation and other physical impairments. With valuable input from patients, the center’s focus is on creating clinically viable technologies that advance prosthesis design and control, allowing individuals with limb loss and difference to live more independently. BIOLOGICS LABORATORY At Shirley Ryan AbilityLab's Biologics Laboratory — the only one of its kind in a rehabilitation hospital — biological tissue is processed with an eye toward understanding human problems and advancing patient outcomes. It is driven by a forward-thinking, risk-taking, science-embracing strategy that harnesses the best and brightest minds to make patients better.

Jasper Climbs Back to Beat the Odds After Spinal Cord Injury One summer afternoon, Kori and Greg got a call no parent ever wants to receive: Their 15-year-old daughter, Jasper F., had fallen 40 feet during climbing camp in rural Virginia. Jasper, an avid and experienced climber, had shattered both ankles and wrists, and sustained a severe spinal cord injury that left her partially paralyzed from the waist down. She went through three major surgeries in the first 24 hours. “When the neurosurgeon came out, he told us she would never walk again,” said Greg. Jasper was in acute care, much of it in the ICU, for a month and a half. She was healing, but still not allowed to put any weight on her legs and feet. Greg and Kori began researching rehabilitation hospitals but, due to the complexity of Jasper’s condition, she was turned down by every one they contacted ... except Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. “Shirley Ryan AbilityLab popped up early and often as the premier facility for Jasper’s type of injury,” Kori said. “The people we spoke with were intrigued, not daunted, by Jasper’s unique challenges. They wanted to try to help her.” Jasper was airlifted to Shirley Ryan AbilityLab and began intensive inpatient therapy. Though she was unable to bear weight, Jasper’s therapy focused on core strength and everyday activities that she would need to be able to do without standing. “At first, sitting up made me feel like I was going to pass out,” said Jasper. “From there, I learned how to get dressed, transfer into and out of a wheelchair, a bed, chair and car. In occupational therapy, I worked on pinching and grabbing.” Thanks to Jasper’s fitness and determination, she was healing faster than expected. Jasper transitioned from inpatient into DayRehab, where finally she was able to try bearing weight. “On that first day, I stood up!” said Jasper. Jasper says she’s only looking forward, and even participated in Shirley Ryan AbilityLab’s annual stair climb up Chicago’s Willis Tower. “One of my big goals is to be able to do whatever I want and not have my injuries stop me … just regain that ability and confidence,” she said.

Dave Marks Big Step in Personal Journey After Limb Loss When Dave J. graduated from law school, a congenital heart defect slowed his progress toward becoming a lawyer. After experiencing complications following a heart transplant, it became necessary for Dave’s left leg to be amputated. Dave came to Shirley Ryan AbilityLab for rehabilitation after his limb loss, spending several months as an inpatient, followed by DayRehab, for physical and occupational therapy. “When I arrived at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, I couldn’t do anything,” he said. “I couldn’t really move or do things for myself.” During inpatient care, Dave learned to move by himself once again — first transferring from his bed to a wheelchair using a slide board, then learning to stand and pivot. He slowly gained the strength and ability to hop using a walker, and he mastered activities of daily living such as dressing himself and managing personal tasks independently. As part of his recovery, Dave was fitted for a prosthetic leg. He participated in training on how to stand and walk using his new leg, eventually learning to walk with the assistance of his cane or walker. As Dave continued to make gains in his mobility, he set his sights on a new milestone: passing the bar exam three years after his heart transplant. He officially was sworn in as a lawyer and, during the ceremony, he stood on his own while taking the oath to practice law in Illinois. “I want to be an inspiration for whoever may need it,” said Dave.

The intensity of the individualized DayRehab program is modified based on clinical recommendations and your insurance plan to maximize benefits. For example, some programs may consist of three hours of therapy per day, two to three days per week. For others, a

Newlywed Jordan Embraces New Beginnings Following Stroke at 29 A beautiful fall day marked the beginning of Jordan and Nico D.’s life together as they celebrated their wedding surrounded by family and friends — but everything would change two months later. While driving to work, Jordan, 29, had sudden and extreme pain on the side of her head. She suspected she was experiencing a stroke and, fortunately, she was able to get to the emergency room quickly. Within hours she was in surgery, followed by six weeks in intensive care. “Jordan is the absolute kindest, most driven person, and is full of life and love,” said her husband, Nico. “As with so many things, I have never bet against her coming out on top.” The stroke caused Jordan to lose mobility in her right arm and leg. It also caused aphasia, a condition that can occur suddenly after a stroke or brain injury that impacts a person’s ability to speak and understand language, reading and writing. However, buoyed by a fighting spirit, a bright smile and the incredible support of her family, Jordan came to Shirley Ryan AbilityLab for two multi-week inpatient stays for her stroke recovery. Through high-intensity physical therapy, Jordan worked on building strength, regaining her ability to walk with the use of a cane, and walking up and down stairs so she could return to living in her multi-story home. Jordan’s occupational therapy included time in Shirley Ryan AbilityLab’s Activities for Daily Living (ADL) studio, where she practiced home tasks like taking items in and out of a refrigerator and loading the dishwasher. Also, speech-language pathologists helped Jordan make gains in speech and reading skills.
