SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGISTS Our speech language pathologists (SLPs) are licensed, certified and among the most experienced in the field of aphasia treatment. SLPs will assess your thinking processes and ability to communicate, and then develop a treatment plan that focuses on understanding and remembering information, talking/ communicating and swallowing. Although each patient’s treatment plan is unique, outpatient rehabilitation typically includes a minimum of 1-2 hours of therapy, 1-2 times a week, with doctors and therapists in the specialty program aligning most closely with the source of your injury or condition. Frequency, intensity and duration of daily activity are determined by your care team and change as you progress. We encourage family participation to maximize long-term outcomes.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS Our occupational therapists (OTs) are licensed, certified and many have advanced degrees. They work alongside physicians, and physical therapists to ensure that they are providing the best treatment for you. Currently, there are more than 200 research projects underway, and we hold eight federal research designations from the National Institutes of Health. That means you’ll have early access to innovative therapies and groundbreaking technologies, including the latest prosthetics, orthotics and assistive devices. You may even have an opportunity to be involved in a trial of new treatments under development.

PATIENT STEM CELL BANK FOR PRECISION NEUROTRAUMA RESEARCH Despite the same rehabilitation treatment, some patients with SCI or TBI make life-altering functional gains while others make only limited progress. The most difficult factor that influences a patient’s outcome, is his/her genetic differences. To address this challenge, we have developed a one-of-kind, patient-specific neurotrauma paradigm. To validate this approach, patient-specific nerve cells are generated from people who have suffered different types of neurotrauma (TBI, SCI and peripheral nerve) with carefully documented clinical outcomes. These

them. With our biomarker technology we are currently investigating how different types of walking exercise impacts your own joints, whether you are an adolescent with cerebral palsy and have joint pain, or a person with knee osteoarthritis who just wants to play a round of golf. LOW COST PROSTHETIC ARM SYSTEM Losing an arm has profound economic, social and psychological effects. An artificial arm (prosthesis) can help to replace lost function, enabling people to live independently, work and participate in society. Our team has worked to develop an arm system that will provide access to functional, affordable prosthetic devices for individuals in low-income countries and provide a valuable prosthetic option for low-income or uninsured individuals in the United States. OPEN SOURCE BIONIC LEG People with leg amputations need prostheses that provide appropriate power so that they can reengage in previous work and leisure activities. With researchers at the University of Michigan, we are building a prosthetic leg (with an ankle and knee) that is affordable. Not only will this device benefit lower-limb amputees, but the widespread use of this device will also allow for direct comparison of different control approaches, making future research more efficient.

patient-derived cells are then traumatized in the research laboratory and their decline and recovery is quantified to test the theory that patient-specific human stem cell models can predict neurotrauma outcomes. We hope this will lead us to better clinical trial design and the expansion of more personalized neurotrauma medicine.

USING A PERSONALIZED MEDICINE APPROACH

Using a personalized medicine approach, our goal is to evaluate how an individual with osteoarthritis biologically responds to specific exercises so we can develop an individualized rehabilitation program for

Ashley’s Story: The Comeback

to build strength, she was able to walk consistently. Over the following weeks and months, she continued to reach milestones and goals. In fact, the avid runner was able to run for the first time just 100 days following the accident. Then, in fall 2018, following nerve transfer surgery to address her foot drop, Ashley began outpatient physical therapy at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. “After my first physical therapy appointment, I left with the biggest smile on my face,” said Ashley. “I was able to walk a lap around the room four weeks earlier than my surgeon predicted.” Ashley continued attending physical therapy sessions twice a week for eight months. At the outset, her goals included the ability to flex her foot, and eventually walk and run without her ankle-foot orthosis (AFO). By August 2019, Ashley was able to remove her AFO brace permanently and graduated from outpatient therapy. She regained about 90 percent of the flexion in her right foot, and was able to hit a 12 mile-per-hour stride while running.

Ashley was a 24-year-old accountant and athlete living an active life in Chicago. On May 29, 2017, everything changed. While traveling back from a Memorial Day weekend getaway in Nashville, Tenn., poor visibility led to a 12-car pileup on the highway. Several vehicles slammed into the one Ashley’s friend was driving. The back of the car collapsed into its back seat, where Ashley was sitting. Ashley sustained serious injuries. Her hip dislocated in two places; she had a fractured pelvis and sustained nerve damage to her right leg, resulting in a foot drop — the inability to lift her foot. “The physical therapists I worked with were great and

Ashley’s comeback journey hasn’t just helped her regain movement. Inspired by the care she received, she decided to go back to school to become a certified nursing assistant (CNA). In December 2019, she earned her license and now plans to become a registered nurse (RN). She enters nursing school shortly. “I'm extremely grateful for how far I’ve come in just under three years,” said Ashley. “This accident changed my life for the better and has allowed me to turn this setback into my biggest comeback.”

extremely creative. They were constantly thinking of new ways to kick-start movement in my foot.

Two weeks after the accident, Ashley was transported by ambulance from an acute-care hospital in Champagne, Ill., to Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, where she would spend two weeks as an inpatient undergoing intensive physical and occupational therapy. Her inpatient stay helped Ashley gain the strength and knowledge she needed to live independently and to navigate in a wheelchair as she continued to recover … but her work was not finished. Seven weeks after the accident, Ashley returned to her job. As Ashley continued Along with Dr. Franz, my physician, they never gave up on me and were some of my biggest cheerleaders.” — Ashley
