DR. MARK BARLOW’S IMPRESSIVE BACKGROUND
BRINGS EXCITING NEW EXPERIENCE TO OUR CLINIC
In last month’s newsletter, we briefly mentioned how thrilled we are to welcome Dr. Mark Barlow to our team. Now, we are a trifecta of surgeons serving our patients every day! If you haven’t had a chance to meet Dr. Barlow and learn a little more about him, you’re in for a treat. Dr. Barlow received his plastic surgery training at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. In addition to the thousands of cases they work every year, this integrated plastic surgeon program included rotations in Miami to focus on aesthetic surgery with noted experts specializing in facelifts, eyelid surgery, and breast augmentations and lifts. Dr. Barlow also received detailed training in injectables like Botox and dermal fillers during these rotations. After training at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston to learn advanced reconstructive techniques, Dr. Barlow built his own successful plastic surgery practice that included both cosmetic and reconstructive procedures of all types. He has varied and extensive experience in the medical field, but prior to all of his impressive medical education and training, to become the fantastic surgeon that he is today, Dr. Barlow was on quite a different (though no less impressive) career track. Dr. Barlow received his undergraduate degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Texas. He then went into the doctoral program at the University of Colorado in aerospace engineering to do research focused on computer modeling of space structures and design of a high-bandwidth actuator for precision control of space structures. He then earned a master’s degree from M.I.T. in aeronautics and astronautics. During his time as a student of aeronautics and astronautics, Dr. Barlow received numerous honors and scholarships including the NASA Space Flight Awareness Award, the NASA Award for Scientific Achievement, the NASA Group Award for Outstanding Performance and Achievement, and the Engineering Foundation Scholarship. This was when he decided to switch gears, but not without good reason. His engineering background naturally led him to plastic surgery, where we work with acute precision and delicate tools during every procedure we do. So, Dr. Barlow headed back to school.
focused on the combination of a collagen-based dermal equivalent with cultured keratinocytes for skin regeneration. He also participated in research on cellular signals in scar formation. He received his doctoral masters from the University of Texas in Houston, then went on to practice surgery at Houston Methodist Clear Lake Hospital, Clear Lake Regional Medical Center, and Houston Methodist Ambulatory Surgery Center. During all that time, Dr. Barlow developed a philosophy that emphasizes personalized, compassionate care and service beyond expectations. He knows how special and unique every patient is, and he preserves the privacy and dignity of his patients while delivering first-class results. He has also served on the Texas Medical Association on the Council on Legislation, the Council Health Service Organizations, and the Student Loan Committee. If you can believe it, there are even more of Dr. Barlow’s accomplishments and accolades to learn about than what we’ve listed here. You can find them on our website, or better yet, ask Dr. Barlow all about them when you see him. He’s got quite a story and the experience of a lifetime. It’s why we’re so excited to have him on our team. – Dr. Sam Sukkar

TOP 5 HEALTHY LIFE HACKS TO HAVE AN AWESOME MORNING
Write in your journal. Who says you have to journal at the end of the day when you’re tired and ready to sleep? You can journal in the morning about what happened yesterday and the things you’re looking forward to that day. Journaling can remind you
Getting your day started with coffee isn’t always enough. Sometimes, you need to give yourself an extra boost, especially when you have little energy or trouble focusing. For an awesome start to your day, here are five tips to get you going right off the bat. Wake up 5 minutes early. What’s the power of five minutes? It can be more than you think. Spend this time doing simple breathing exercises or a quick meditation so you can get focused for the rest of the day. If that’s not your style, you can prepare a quick to-do list for your day ahead. Either way, it’s always nice to have a little extra time for yourself without losing too much sleep. Start with green tea, then coffee. A cup of coffee at 7 a.m. can leave you burned out by 10 a.m. Try swapping it with green tea for a more gentle wake-up call. After that, you can brew your favorite coffee to keep you going strong. This practice also might help you consume less caffeine overall! Take a quick morning walk — and have your meetings on the go. Morning meetings can make us want to fall asleep again. Don’t spend all of them sitting down if you don’t have to! Not only will morning walks help you wake up, but they can also add some extra physical activity to your day.
of your daily goals and motivate you to stick to your commitments.
Pack your lunch (or snacks!). Staying on track with your goals starts with having the energy to do them. Plan a healthy balance of fats, vegetables, carbohydrates, and proteins. This can be as simple as assembling dips, carrots, wraps, and salads each morning.
It’s time to try these tactics to jump-start your day!
SERVICE OF THE MONTH
Fillers, Microblading, and Revitalash
Fillers As we age, we naturally experience sagging and wrinkling around our eyes. For some, it happens under our eyes in the form of bags; for others, wrinkles like crow’s feet on the outside of our eyes become more prominent. No matter what you might experience, fillers and injectables are great options for revitalizing the delicate skin around your eyes. We have a number of options available for collagen replacement and stimulation, like Sculptra, or for skin rehydration, like Juvederm. They’re easy procedures with no downtime and can give the area around your eyes a youthful vibrance. Microblading Thick, lush eyebrows are today’s favorite look, but if you just weren’t blessed with thick eyebrows, or if they fell victim to the pencil-thin trends of the ‘90s, there’s still hope! Microblading is a form of tattooing that creates long-lasting, natural-looking eyebrows. The procedure involves hair-like strokes of pigment that are carefully implanted beneath
your skin with the delicate touch of a handheld tool. If you spend ample time filling in your eyebrows every morning, then microblading is a long-lasting application that can give you the full and expressive brows you’ve always wanted. Revitalash Serum If you want a simple, secret weapon for making your eyes really pop, then it’s all about the lashes. Revitalash Serum is a product crafted to help your eyelashes naturally grow and fill in. This once-a-day serum is brushed onto your existing lashes from root to tip, and after just a few daily applications, many people already start to see the result of thicker, fuller lashes. We sell these treatments in our clinic, and they’re one of our most popular products, so be sure to get yours before it’s gone. If you’re ready to make your eyes the star of the show, contact us today to set up a consultation and see which combination of our services is right for you.
Face masks may cover up half of our faces when we’re out in public, but that just means now is the perfect opportunity to focus on feeling confident about what’s above the mask! If you want to accentuate your eyes and draw attention to their natural beauty, we offer a number of great services and products to make it happen.

GET A SALON-QUALITY MANICURE AT HOME CELEBRITY TIPS FOR BEAUTIFUL DIY NAILS
Pay attention to your cuticles. Your cuticle is the thin layer of skin along the bottom edge of your fingernail, and it can get in the way of a professionally manicured look. To prepare your “canvas” for polish, use a cuticle remover liquid like Butter London ($18 on Amazon and recommended by Byrdie) and/or cuticle clippers to push back your cuticles and remove dead skin. Use the 3-layer approach. There are three layers to a beautiful manicure: the primer or base coat, the polish, and the top coat. According to celebrity manicurist April Foreman, the nail genius behind Charlize Theron and Natalie Portman’s paint jobs, a good primer is the foundation of a perfect manicure. The primer can be clear or nude and goes on before the colored polish to even out imperfections. After both the primer and polish layers dry, add a clear topcoat for a varnished look.
During this year of pandemic chaos, we’ve all limited our trips outside of the house. Odds are that in the last few months, you’ve skipped at least one visit to the hair stylist, spa, or nail salon — and you’re probably noticing the difference! If your nails look worse for wear, it’s time to take action before the holidays.
To get salon-quality nails at home (or pamper your partner with an in-home spa day), use these tips and tricks to take a simple coat of polish to the next level.
DR. SUKKAR'S Word Search *Bring in a completed word search and get $30 off your next IV treatment! Shape your nails like a pro. One thing that people often forget when doing their own nails is to shape them with clippers and a file. This is one of the most important parts of a manicure because nail shapes go in and out of style. According to Cosmopolitan, the “coffin” nail is trending right now thanks to celebrities like Kylie Jenner, Khloé Kardashian, and Ariel Winter. This shape is ideal for long nails and features tapered sides and a straight edge across the top. For a lower maintenance nail, try the “squoval,” a square-oval hybrid with a gently curved tip.
With these tips in your back pocket, you’ll have no problem taking your manicure into your own hands (pun intended)!
We are so excited to add another board-certified plastic surgeon to our practice: Dr. Mark Barlow. We are now a three-doctor practice and are offering a wider variety of surgical and nonsurgical procedures, as well as a robust wellness program to better serve our patients. Welcome DR. MARK BARLOW

IS ‘GLAMPING’ THE PERFECT WINTER GETAWAY?
Is ‘Glamping’ the Perfect Winter Getaway? CABIN FEVER HAS NEVER BEEN SO STYLISH
When COVID-19 struck the U.S., travel restrictions had people canceling their vacation plans left and right. This meant that many would-be vacationers had to find some getaways a little closer to home — namely, camping trips and their fancier cousin, glamping trips. If you haven’t heard of “glamping” before, it’s essentially glamorous camping. You have access to the beautiful, rugged outdoors as well as all the comforts of home. While traditional winter camping certainly wouldn’t be a relaxing getaway for most people, glamping during the winter months can give you access to the peace of the outdoors like you’ve never experienced before without so much as a shiver or sniffle. If you’ve decided to make glamping your go-to method of escape from the cabin fever that besets us all during the cold, dark winter days, you might be thinking: How can I make sure I have the best glamping experience possible? Luckily, there are a few tips and tricks you can apply to any glamping location to ensure that your time away from home is just as relaxing as that Caribbean cruise would have been. Step 1: Decide which kind of lodging you want. Glamping shelters come in all shapes and sizes depending on the level of comfort you desire on your trip. The most rugged glamping lodgings usually
still include a wood-burning stove and a nice comfy bed, whether you opt for a log cabin or a specialized glamping tent (sometimes called a yurt). However, some of the more posh options include amenities like fresh linens, private bathrooms and showers, fully stocked kitchenettes, and even TVs.
Step 2: Decide how you want to spend your time. Obviously, the point of glamping is to spend time in the great outdoors with winter activities, such as snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and other fun snow activities. However, glamping really shines during the frigid evenings. You can retreat indoors, throw some logs in the stove, prepare some hot cocoa or cider, and just watch the snowfall from your window. There’s no right or wrong way to glamp. All that matters is spending time in the wilderness with all the comforts of home — all while feeling refreshed and at peace.
