NOT JUST A ‘NEW YEAR’ LET’S ENGAGE WITH 2021 DELIBERATELY

2020 is behind us, and a lot of people are saying “good riddance.” Many are looking at last year as one of the worst on record. I’m sure a lot of you readers can relate, and I have several things that I’m hoping will be different in 2021. The biggest one is the vaccine, of course — with the COVID-19 still very much alive and well in many places, we need the new vaccines more than ever! I suspect it will take a few months before most folks have the chance to see the vaccine, but I do believe that we will have a very different second half of 2021 than the first half. But let’s take a moment and look on the bright side of things. For one, 2020 saw a lot of growth in the clinic, including some exciting additions to our staff. For another, we found ways to thrive despite the adversity we all faced. And most important of all, we continued to serve our wonderful patients. That is worth celebrating! As we enter this new year, let us do so with good intentions and attempt to have a positive outlook. True, we must continue to distance ourselves socially from each other and wear our masks in public. But the newer, slower pace of life for many affords opportunities in 2021 that we should not ignore. This would be a great year to pick up a hobby, learn a new language, or set up a reading list for ourselves. Most of us streamed a fair amount of television during the various lockdowns and quarantines of the past nine months, and I think that’s fine. But what might we accomplish if we had a plan for that time going forward? That’s a question we all can answer in our own way and something to look forward to as we enter 2021. Between the New Year’s tradition and the circumstances of COVID-19, there’s never been a better time for starting something new. It’s also a fine time for medical treatment, especially if you work from home. You can recover from a facelift, lip fill, or other procedure in the comfort and privacy of your house — no awkward conversations around the office or having to take a sick day that you’d rather save for later. I’ve come to see this as a silver lining to the pandemic and have been pleased that many patients prefer the new way of working when it comes to treatment recovery. We’ve embraced virtual methods wherever possible in our clinic, as I’ve discussed in the past. Some of these changes are likely here to stay. Although I can’t wait to see more patients in person, I also don’t see why someone

who’d prefer a virtual consultation shouldn’t be able to do that with our office. And I think that’s one of the big takeaways from this past year: Going forward, we’re going to have more options than we did in the past when it comes to how we do business. So that’s the attitude I’m trying to have this New Year’s Day. I don’t just want to be happy that 2020 is over, because when you pick that apart it’s not that positive of a mindset. No, I want to engage with 2021 deliberately and intentionally. I want to find the right ways to move forward, keep an open mind, and serve our patients as best I can. I hope you’ll join me.

SERVICE OF THE MONTH

New Year, New You!

All of us sometimes wish we could start over fresh, right? That’s one of the nice things about New Year’s — it offers, at least in theory, the chance to do exactly that. But how does theory become reality? We’ve thought about this a lot because we get to help people with that “fresh” start every day. And we’ve come to a few conclusions about it. If there’s one thing many of our patients have in common, it’s that they’ve spent a lot of time thinking about the procedure or treatment they’re going in for. Sometimes this means time in front of a mirror eyeing something they don’t like. In other cases, it means that readers get through their hectic day of work and kids by thinking about the day at our Medical Spa that they’ve promised themselves … someday. For some, there’s even real worry about the treatments — they know that they’d benefit from a facelift, for example, but are worried about side- effects or end results.

spend time considering their options, but they don’t do the most important part: reach out and ask questions so they can have the information they need to succeed. We will help you decide if treatment is right for you and answer any questions you have. We’ll show you ways to save and still get the look you want. And we can make “someday” happen much sooner than you think. Because you aren’t alone in this. You have a whole team of experts and the best medical technology in the world on your side. We do consultations every day, even remotely, meaning you can fit a consult into your busy schedule. You deserve to feel and look your best, and a consult is the first step on that road. Stop worrying, and let us do the heavy lifting instead. It’s a new year, so why can’t there be a new you? With our help, there can.

But if the new year is the time for anything, it’s time to stop thinking and seize the day. Often, patients

HOW HABIT TRACKING AND DAILY RESOLUTIONS COULD TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE

Yearly resolutions are so last year … if they’re your only resolutions, that is.

We’re smack in the middle of broccoli season, and fried rice is the perfect dish to celebrate it. This savory, plant-based recipe is packed with nutritious vegetables and delicious Thai flavors. Tasty Thai Fried Rice people about a simple habit they wanted to form, like drinking water at lunch or taking a walk before dinner. They found that the average amount of time it took before the action became automatic was 66 days! Don’t be too hard on yourself if you miss a day, but know that sticking to a new habit is serious work, so starting small might help you out. Another important aspect of forming new daily habits is rewarding yourself. Bad habits, like smoking, have an inherent reward. However, healthy habits can have rewards too! Try consuming a bit of dark chocolate after a workout or treating yourself to a fresh beverage or relaxing to a podcast after tackling an important task. Find ways to reward yourself, and you’ll be more likely to stick to your new habit. Certain daily resolutions don’t have to be related to exercise or diet to majorly improve your life. For example, having a gratitude journal might boost your long-term happiness by 10% and improve your blood pressure. Don’t hesitate to improve your quality of life! Just start small, and you’ll be amazed by how far you’ll go.

Having long-term goals isn’t a bad thing, but do you have a daily plan to reach them? The huge boost of motivation in January isn’t always enough to sustain you all year long. That’s why there are major benefits to starting new healthy habits, whether you increase your weekly exercise time, eat healthier foods, or work on getting better or more sleep.

Luckily, sticking with these habits might be as easy as making daily resolutions to complement your yearly goals.

BJ Fogg, a Stanford University professor and author of “Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything,” notes that tiny habits can make a new habit easy to implement into your daily ritual. For example, taking a short daily walk could lead to an exercise habit, or keeping an apple in your bag every day could encourage healthier snacking.

It’s important that you stick with it because habits take a long time to create. One study published by the European Journal of Social Psychology asked

3 Cool Airports That Will Leave You

Begging for a Layover

Dubai International Airport (DXB) This airport is one of the biggest and busiest in the world, but it is also one of the most spacious. Many travelers remark upon how open and airy DXB feels. But what really sets this airport apart are the amenities. In short, this place knows rest and relaxation, and they do it in utmost luxury. You’ll find spas, gyms, swimming pools, zen gardens, and more. It also boasts the fastest, most reliable Wi-Fi in the world. Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) This airport is packed with restaurants and shops. You’ll find something for every appetite, as SIN offers cuisines from all over the world in one place. But as impressive as the restaurant selection may be, the crown jewel of the airport is the indoor jungle. Here, you’ll find the world’s largest indoor waterfall surrounded by a lush forest. Behold and explore this unique site while you wait for your next flight.

While travel has been down over the past year, people still have places to be and things to do all over the world. Air travel is still very much alive, and many carriers have adapted to the global situation. While travel numbers may be down, one thing hasn’t changed: Countless travelers still find themselves trapped in airports for hours on end waiting for their next flight. But not every layover is something to bemoan. Take a look at these three airports worth getting stuck in. Incheon International Airport (ICN) About a 30-minute drive from Seoul, South Korea, ICN has become something of a cultural hub for the nation. If you’re on a long layover, it’s remarkably easy to hop over to Seoul, but if you have a short layover, don’t worry. ICN brings Seoul to you! While you wait for your flight, you can immerse yourself in the local culture by attending a performance or K-pop concert or visiting a museum. If it’s physical activity you’re looking for, play a round of golf at the golf course or go ice skating at the rink!
