place within the veil where He exercises omnipotent intercession. . . . He is Himself the Alpha and Omega of the promises of God; in Him we have found life as sin ners ; in Him we shall find glory as saints. I f He be not risen, our faith is vain; and if He come not a second time, our hope is a delusion; but since He has risen from the dead, we are justified; since He will come in the glory of His Father, we also shall be glorified. Nothing is too good for the Father to give to the man who delights in His Son Jesus. — C h arles H addon S purgeon . What could Jehovah do but accept such a challenge? His Word is in question. The council in heaven has heard Jehovah’s esti mate of His godly servant; it has heard also the insinuating sneer of the fallen angel. The loyalty of Job must be proved, and all hea'ven shall know that Jehovah can be loved and worshiped for Himself alone, even by a fallen son o f Adam. . . . Let this be an incentive to thy fidelity, poor tempted soul; and seeing thou art compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, “fight the good fight o f faith,” ever remembering that all the resources o f Omnipotence are thine. •— J. G regory M a n t l e . OCTOBER 23 Praise Changes Things “ Thou shalt call thy walls Salvation, and thy gates Praise” (Isa. 60:18). The place of praise in Christian work is no unimportant one, either in the honor it brings to God, or in the blessing which it reflects upon the soul. “It is good to sing praises unto our God; for it is pleasant; and praise is comely” (Psa. 147:1). “ The garment o f praise sits handsome on a saint’s back,” as an old writer has it. — H u bert , B rooke . Once a general, reviewing his troops, declared that he would rather command a handful o f singing soldiers than a brigade o f sullen, silent fighting men. “ Singers eat up the miles,” he said. “ They travel double the distance in half the number o f hours.”— S elected . OCTOBER 22 Remember Job “Put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy fdce" (Job 1 :11). “ Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice" (Psa. 50:5). The saints of God are those who “have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.” The fundamental entering into covenant with God is “by sacrifice.” . . . First enter into covenant with the Most High God, through the blood of the sacrifice! Then day by day offer thy heart, thine obedience, thy prayer; prayer for pardon, and for strength, and for guidance, and thy praise for what He has done, and for what He is to thee. “Whoso offereth praise glorifieth m e: and to him that ordereth his conver sation [his life] aright will I show the sal vation of G od !” — J. E lder C u m m in g . Jesus, Thy blood and righteousness My beauty are, my glorious dress; ’Midst flaming worlds, in these arrayed, With joy shall I lift up my head. — J o h n W esley . OCTOBER 25 Four Guideposts “ The meek will he teach his way" (Psa. 25:9). There is, in the New Testament, a four fold guiding -Siconscience, the W ord of God, the Holy Spirit, and the outward providences of God. Conscience is that guide which God gave to man at the be ginning—that inner tribunal, or judge, which every man possesses; but it was jarred by the fall, and, therefore, con science has to be readjusted by the written Word. We must have, then, the outward circumstances; the inner Voice; the written W ord; and the presiding, guiding Spirit. With these we cannot go wrong if we are abiding in Christ. If you are in any diffi culty, investigate the circumstances all round; read all that the written Word has to say upon it, pray, and then proceed. —C. A. Fox. You say, “My faith will never hold out.” Now if you are worrying about your faith, you have your eyes in the wrong direction, and your path will be crooked. “Make straight paths for your feet.” How? By laying aside all encumbrance—even the en cumbrance of undue introspection—putting on “patience,” and "looking unto Jesus.” He is the “author” o f faith; He is the “finisher” o f faith. . . . Faith is enfeebled as the believer attends to his faith rather than to the thing he believes in. . . . “ Look away to Jesus I” With good courage say, “The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear.” Reckon on Himl You have not trusted Him half enough yet. Trust Him wholly! — S elected . OCTOBER 27 Alone “Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away” (Cant. 2:10). Should there not be seasons when we just pour out our heart’s love into His heart, and absolutely bury our trust in His faithfulness, and tell Him that we do so? Must ’there not be transactions between God alone and our souls ? The secret of the Lord is with them that fear Him, and to them He shows His covenant. O my soul, thou must practice this alone waiting upon God, by being more solemnly intimate with Him !—H. T. C h ilvers . Consider Him as you run the race, Keep looking up in the Master’s face, Until His beauty be seen in thee, And thou, beholding Him, like Him shall be. — S elected . OCTOBER 26 Jesus, the Perfecter of Faith “ Trust ye in the Lord fo r ever: for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength" (Isa. 26:4).
