Home Seller's Guide by Cynthia Rich

TWO WEEKS BEFORE MOVING

Call ahead to connect utilities at your new home. Make final packing decisions and start packing items you don’t use often. Clean out your home, including closets, basements, and attics. Call to transfer your bank account & empty your safety deposit box.

Carry valuables with you and collect any hidden ones. Check if you can move house plants or give them away. Plan meals to use up food in your freezer and fridge. Service your car if traveling by it. Transfer prescriptions to a pharmacy in your new town.

Dispose of flammable items like fireworks, cleaning fluids, and paint. Drain oil and gasoline from lawn mowers and power tools. Check the owner’s manual for instructions.

ONE WEEK BEFORE MOVING

This week, focus on tying up loose ends for your move. Check this guide to ensure you've covered everything. Use the labels provided by your moving company ("Do Not Load," "Load First," "Load Last," "Fragile") to properly mark your goods. Pack suitcases and confirm travel plans (flights, hotel, rental cars). Keep plans flexible for any unexpected changes. Ensure your moving agent has your contact details if you're not going directly to your new home. One day before moving, defrost and clean your fridge and freezer, and prepare your stove if needed. Use baking soda to eliminate odors. Prepare a "Trip Kit" with snacks, beverages, and games for kids. If stopping overnight, pack essentials like toothbrushes. Return rented cable receivers.
