God in Horeb in the day of the as sembly, saying Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not (D eu teronomy 18:16). When God spoke at Sinai, the people, | because of their sin, could not stand to hear His voice. A man must be holy to commune with the Almighty. Before Adam sinned, he communed freely with God, but after the fall, we read: And the Lord God called unto Adam . . . And he [ Adam] scdd, l heard Thy voice in the garden, and was afraid . . . (Genesis 3 :9,10). Sin in the human heart is a divider between the sinner and God, so that direct communication is well-nigh unbearable, insofar as man is con cerned. The writer to the Hebrews comments on the nation’s experience at Horeb, saying, . . . the voice of words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them anymore: For they could not en dure that which was commanded . . . (Hebrews 12:19,20). Referring to the plea of the people for God to refrain His direct communica tion to them, the Lord said, They have well spoken that which they have spoken. 1 will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them cdl that I shall command him (Deuteron omy 18:17,18). In a more perfect sense Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of the prophetic office. Moses was God’s mediator under the dispensation of the Law (Galatians 3:19), but now: For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus (1 Timothy 2:5). Christ is the Word (John 1:1), the direct line of communication between the Father and sinful man. He is the very expression of God, the “ express image of His Person,” and “ God . . . hath in these last days spoken unto us by His Son” (Hebrews 1:1-3). The office of the true prophet, then, is that of a Mediator. Heed Him! END.
