Minister's Library Handbook By Jay J. Smith Three or four books on the minister and his library have been published in recent years. This one is not so much a detailed system of arrange ment and detail but rather a discus sion of the kinds of books to purchase and where to buy them. There are lists of dealers and publishers and hints on where to look for titles both in print and out of print. There is a bibliography of other helpful books on book selection and related themes. Most pastors never get their libraries properly organized, but would be more effective preachers if they did. 148 pages; cloth; W. A. Wilde Co., Boston; $2.50. A Spiritual Clinic By J. Oswald Sanders The subtitle indicates that this is a “ suggestive diagnosis and prescrip tion for problems in Christian life and service.” Proceeding from a psy chological viewpoint the author, who is general director of the China In land Mission, proceeds to the Scrip tural answer to the various problems. This leads to the study of the lives of some of the biblical characters, expo sition of some important passages of Scripture, or of biblical principles. Nineteen chapters are concerned with Christian experience and service in about equal proportions. 160 pages; cloth; Moody Press, Chicago; $2.75. Calvary: Purposes of Calvary, Voices from Calvary, Crucible of Calvary By Harry Bimmer Formerly published as three separ ate titles, this rich material of the late staunch defender of the faith gets into his more spiritual personal convic tions. The deeper implications of re demption for both the individual and for the nation are explored in the first part. The second and third sections delve into viewpoints of various na tions and individuals as they face the cross. The direct and graphic lan guage of Dr. Rimmer appeal to the reader, and the truth is set in the light of its apologetic value. 284 pages; cloth; Berne Witness, Berne, Indiana. $3.00.

The Living Scriptures By Jack Hamm

Refreshingly clear and meaningful are the 120 religious drawings by Jack Hamm, commercial artist, in this cartoon filled book. Here are true messages drawn from God’s Word made practical to the present day man, woman, and child. The many applications to youth deci sions makes the book dependable, usable, and valuable. This shows a “prize-winner,” not only from the viewpoint of having a well manipulated pen and brush, but from the standpoint of supplying a great need for the minister, educa tional director, teacher, and student. One needs to own a book of this type for personal inspiration and enjoy ment. 127 pages; paper; Kregel Publi cations, Grand Rapids; $1.50^B Re viewed by Dorothy Kindell. This Woy to Happiness From a thoroughly biblical point of view and out of a wide background of experience the author discusses the basic problems of life. The psycho logical need and problems of the average man are often not understood by the man himself or his friends, but like physical disabilities and require ments can be diagnosed and met when these things are understood and properly handled. There can be no fully satisfactory solution to the prob lems of life apart from a proper ad justment to Christ and a settlement of the sin question. Dr. Narramore fully accepts this fact, but he reminds us that the mind can still be in need of therapy even though the heart is right. The exquisite balance of the whole man is a delicate thing. Love, guilt, fear, insecurity and a number of other things can upset it. The book contains many insights and prac tical suggestions for the layman. 183 pages; cloth; Zondervan Publishing House, Grand Rapids; $2.95. (There is also a condensed edition published by Christian Readers Club, West chester, 111., 63 pages; paper; 50c.) Do you want your books to be used in the Lord's service? The BIOLA library appreciates the gift of books of all kinds, particularly those of a theological nature. The new Rose Memorial Library on the BIOLA campus will house more than 100,000 volumes.
