Rockland, along with Peterborough and Belleville, as three communities in the OLG expansion zone list which do not have slots or other gaming setups but have expressed interest in becoming a casino gambling site. Mayor Guibord dismissed the idea, saying it was not true for several reasons, the main one being that no group has approached the city expressing interest in developing such a project. He observed that there al- ready is an established gaming establish- ment nearby across the Ottawa River at Ca- sino Lac Leamy. The mayor also noted that council and city administration would first need to know what kind of infrastructure and sup- port services such an establishment would need, along with the potential impact on the surrounding community of having a ca- sino set up here. None of that information is available right now and Mayor Guibord sees no urgent rea- son for it at present. “We just don’t know,” he said. “And we have other things to think about.”

Rockland | The business community con- tinues to grow in Clarence-Rockland. The SmartCentres mall will have two new es- tablishments by next spring. Dennis Eberhard, vice-president for de- velopment at the SmartCentres Ottawa of- fice, confirmed that the shopping centre developer will expand its Rockland setup by two more businesses in 2013 and may have more potential clients for the remain- der of the undeveloped areas of the prop- erty in future. “We do have some land beside the Wal- Mart,” Eberhard said. “We are forever hope- ful.” Right now the Bulk Barn and The Source have both committed to setting up fran- chises in Rockland at the SmartCentres site at the west end of town. Rockland | The City of Clarence-Rockland may be listed as a potential location for potential casino gambling developments but that doesn’t mean there are any plans afoot to bring a bit of Las Vegas style to the local business profile. Mayor Marcel Guibord dismissed any suggestion that Clarence-Rockland could become home to a casino gambling resort or any rumour that any group is looking around for land in the area. “No, not at all,”Mayor Guibord said during an interview Aug. 23. Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. (OLG) keeps a list of expansion zones where inter- ested groups and consortiums looking for possible casino gambling sites might check out the local property sites, support servic- es, and potential market sources. A Toronto Star article listed Clarence-

application and the site plan approval be- fore going ahead later in the autumn with construction on a 7150-square-foot build- ing located next door to the Boston Pizza restaurant. Construction should begin in Septem- ber with a projected completion date of February 2013. The two businesses should take occupancy of the building in time for a spring 2013 opening.
