make the effort to cast aside “all things" that do not bring honor and glory to Him. The "also” means “in addition to” the thirfgs listed in verse 5. Though “all things” is lit­ erally the same as is found in 1:16, it has an entirely different meaning. Here t h e complementary phrase, “like the following,” must be under­ stood. The sins that he lists are a con­ tinuation of those found in verse 5. (For a similar passage see Eph. 4: 25-31.) “Wrath.” Not all wrath is evil (v. 6; Eph. 4:26). as one unit. Now we are commanded to walk in such a manner as will glorify our Lord (2:6; I John 2 :6). “Then, when you lived in them.” Note that here lived and walked are synonymous. These things are the environment of the unbeliever in which he revels, grows, and devel­ ops. Only the grace of God can take a person out of such a situation and give him the power not to return (Rom. 7:15-25). Verse 8. “And now you yourselves” is an emphatic call to finish the work begun at conversion, i.e., to “put away” all the remnants of the old life of sin. We are to renounce all that is not of God (cp. Phil. 3:7, 8). Let us heed his words.
