Born in 1918 in West Virginia, Katherine Johnson always had a deep love for math. With hard work and passion, she skipped several grades, starting college at age fifteen and graduating at age eighteen. In 1953, Katherine moved to Virginia to work for the research organization that would eventually become NASA, working on essential calculations for flight and then space flight missions. She had a key role in the success of early space flights, including Freedom, Friendship, Apollo missions, and all space missions through 1986. Third graders will be excited to learn about Katherine Johnson’s historic contributions to space exploration!
