There are some things which humans won’t do without, even when they are proven to be inconvenient, inefficient, and injurious. Like drugs and children, the urge towards making art transcends cultural context, although material conditions might affect who composes a ballad and who conducts an orches- tra. Imagine if you will a book. It is a book by an author whose name you have never heard before, but you have been recommended it by people whose reading tastes you highly trust. You read the book. You love it. It is a period piece, set in a time before 1928. You look up the author and find they have not written much else. But the creativity and verve of this one work astounds you.
