The Academic Journey of Jane and Ela
Compromise Oboro
Jane and Ela were two blossom friends from elementary school in Adaba, a town in Nige - ria. They both planned to take their educa - tion to the university level. They were devot - ed, intelligent, and hardworking. However, Ela was more brilliant than Jane. They came from different backgrounds. While Jane was from a rich family, Ela came from a very poor family. Unfortunately, after high school, Ela could not continue her education at the uni -
versity level because her parents could not afford to pay her tuition and other expenses. Ela pleaded with Jane to tell her parents to assist her financially so that she could further her education. Jane refused to tell her parents because she was jealous of Ela’s brilliant performances at elementary and high school. Jane eventually went to a private university to continue her education, while Ela could not further her education. At the university, Jane could not do well in her studies because Ela was not there to assist and motivate her. She failed some of her classes and only managed to graduate from college. She could not se - cure the job of her choice and had to settle for something after three years of job searching. However, Ela spent the next five years at home struggling to raise money to continue her education. She was reading the newspaper one fateful morning when she read that a wealthy man was giving scholarships to brilliant students who were less privileged and using written essays as the criterion. Every year, students would compete and the student with the best essay would be the win - ner of the scholarship for that year. Ela was very happy to hear about this and started preparing for the competition. She took part in the competition and be - came first among the competitors. Ela got the scholarship to study her dream course at the university of her choice. She got admitted into the medical school and graduated as the best student after seven years of studying. She got a job immediately after she finished school and brought her family out of poverty.
