Everyone was a teenager at one point: carefree and optimistic about life. In the picture, my grandfather sits relaxed in a chair, somewhere in Italy in the 1940s. He is sat comfortably, with a guitar in hand, and a smile on his face. He has no - where to be, yet he is dressed to the nines. I would like to imagine he is playing a tune that he would sing to his grand - children decades later, how amazing would that be to be con - nected in that way. I would imag - ine my grandmother is standing right there in front of him, the reason for his smirk, the recipient of the Italian tune dancing off his lips. Life in Italy was slow and enjoyable. After - noons spent outside of cafes, with a strong espresso, a sweet biscotti, and the company of
family and friends. It’s crazy to think that they would run from this life, to the land of unknown promises, two babies to care for. When did he decide that America was better for his family’s future? It couldn’t have been in this moment.
