chocolate cake, one for each of us. Nerves ate at my mind; my stomach twisted itself into knots. I was so worried she’d say no…. “I’m back!” Autumn bounced over to the table and paused, staring at the dessert. “What’s this?” She sat back down at her seat. Her forest green eyes met my sky blue ones. I took a single deep breath before I stood up. I made my way to Autumn’s side and knelt, holding the box in my hands. Her gaze followed me, her eyes widening in surprise. “Autumn, my heart. We’ve been beside each other for our whole lives. We’ve been in love for just as long, even if neither of us acknowledged it until three years ago,” I said, opening the box. The light reflected off the ring creating a small dot over her heart. “Oh my God…,” she said. Her hands moved to cover her mouth, and her eyes filled with tears. “You are my other half, my heart, the source of my life. I love you, Autumn. I love you so, so much.” I pulled in another shaky breath, this time accom- panied by tears. “Will you marry me?” I smiled warmly at her. “Yes. Yes! Of course, I’ll marry you, my love!” Her lips pulled up into a breathtaking grin. I put the ring on her finger before I pulled her into a tight hug. Happiness burst in my chest and filled my whole being. She leaned forward and we kissed briefly. It was a perfect night. At least it was supposed to be. After we finished our dessert and paid, we left. The rain that had been drifting off and on all day solidified into a heavy downpour. Thunder was booming in the distance. Lightning was striking around us. I was driving, like normal, and Autumn was in the passenger seat. She hadn’t stopped smiling since I proposed. Her gaze was trained on the ring, admiring it. Atlantis wasn’t far from our house — maybe a twenty-minute drive on a good day. The storm made it longer. As I started to drive, the rain and wind picked up. Visibility dropped to zero.
